One of my favorite Catholic churches in Nebraska is the former Saint Catherine Catholic Church in Riverton. Located in Franklin County, this simple mission-style church has striking proportions, especially noted on the front entrance area with its symmetry in the two recessed windows that flank the door and the recessed oculus window in the choir loft. My research these past few years indicate it was designed by Maxine Packwood Johnson, a native of Riverton, who then lived in Lincoln, and was married to Robert Ewing Johnson. In the 1930s, women architects in Nebraska were rare at this time. Does anyone have photographs of this church (interior and exterior) and information on Maxine and her life? Let's try to remember both the legacy of this now closed parish in Riverton and wonderful architect! Please reach out to us... Village of Bloomington

A special place in Nebraska Catholic history is the Pioneer Chapel near Milligan in Fillmore County. Immigrants from the surrounding area were Catholic Czech and Irish decent. The chapel, the first permanent house of worship in Fillmore County, was built in the 1870's on the Josef Kotas farm northwest of the cemetery. The chapel was moved to the cemetery from the Kotas farm in 1901. The building was restored and dedicated as the Pioneer Chapel in 1998. We visited this site on November 14, 2020.
