Spent a great afternoon making friends with the Indian Steps Museum in Airville, PA close to Lock 12 on the Susquehanna & Tidewater Canal. American Indian artifacts pressed into the walls like petroglyphs and recycled/upcycled granite from the defunct canal in its construction from the early 1900s. Fascinating museum and worth the trip north (about 45 minutes from HDG).

The Public Art Committee of the Havre de Grace Arts Collective, Inc. is proud to announce another major public art installation in the City of Havre de Grace. “Birds of the Chesapeake” is a collection of 10 wood sculptures of various birds found in the Chesapeake Bay region including the Great Blue Heron, Osprey and others. These sculptures will be affixed atop various pilings that are part of the Concord Point Pier in Concord Point Park. The pier is easily accessible via the Promenade. Maryland artist, Joseph Stebbing, is an accomplished chainsaw sculptor who has produced numerous pieces for private and public customers. His interpretations will be placed on the pier in a way that will allow visitors exciting viewing and photographic opportunities overlooking the Bay and Susquehanna River and Flats.

A dedication and unveiling ceremony will be held, Sunday, August 22nd, 2pm at the Concord Pier site. This event will be held in conjunction with the Havre de Grace Alliance’s Waterfront Festival (August 19-22). Six of the 10 sculptures will be unveiled at that time. The four remaining pieces will be installed soon.

Primary funding for this public art project is from a private donor along with additional funding from the Havre de Grace Arts Collective. This project also follows guidance and methods prescribed in the Havre de Grace Public Art Plan, adopted by the City of Havre de Grace in 2015 and managed by the Public Art Committee of the Havre de Grace Arts Collective, Inc.

Our Story

Open seasonally April through October.

Built in 1840, the Lock House served as home to the lock tender and as the office for the toll collector of the Susquehanna and Tidewater Canal Company, which was in operation from 1840 into the 1890s. The museum tells the canal transportation history of the S & T Canal from Wrightsville, PA to Havre de Grace and life in mid-19th century America. The Lock House Museum located along the beautiful Susquehanna River in Havre de Grace, Maryland, hosts several special fundraising events, such as Craft Beer and Wine (April), Pirate Fest (June), and the Candlelight Tour and Holiday Boutique (December).
