Did you know that September is International Underground Railroad Month?

The Maryland Office Of Tourism recently featured our exhibit, "Other Voices of Freedom," on their website as one of ten exhibits that explore the Underground Railroad here in Maryland. Many historians believe Maryland to be the most important state in terms of the Underground Railroad's operations.

Visit the following link to discover key sites (the Maritime Museum included) throughout the state that are relevant to this important part of our history. https://www.visitmaryland.org/list/underground-railroad.

There is also a "Match the Hero with Their Legacy" educational activity for kids at the link (scroll down). In addition, you may request an official Network to Freedom Guide and/or African-American Heritage Guide by scrolling down towards the bottom of the webpage. The booklets may either be mailed to you or downloaded.

September is International Underground Railroad Month, Maryland is the most powerful destination for authentic Underground Railroad history.

Havre de Grace waterfront draws waves of visitors

Thanks to the Chesapeake Bay Journal for recently mentioning us and the "Other Voices of Freedom" and Susquehannock exhibits! The article describes how the City of Havre de Grace was nearly selected to be the nation's capital, but lost to Washington, DC. We are very fortunate to be located in an area that has such a rich history, a history we continue to reflect on today in many of our exhibits.

The First United States Congress had been in session for six months when it passed a resolution to establish a permanent capital. It was 1789, and members of the legislative

PLEASE NOTE: We'll be open tomorrow (July 3) as usual, 10am - 5pm. Go to the Spirit of America Festival and then check us out! However, Sunday (July 4) we will be closed in observance of Independence Day.

Just a friendly reminder to keep this a safe, fun holiday weekend for everyone. Please be mindful of Sunday traffic and road closures due to the Havre de Grace Independence Day Parade, which begins at 2:00 p.m. The parade will progress down Union Avenue, and additional roads may also be closed in historic Havre de Grace. Plan accordingly, keep alert and watch for pedestrians throughout the area.

At 7:30 p.m. in Concord Point Park, The Maryland Military Band performs a free concert featuring patriotic music; no ticket required. Food and drinks will be available for purchase. Fireworks will begin at approximately 9:30 p.m. and may be viewed all along the shoreline in Havre de Grace and throughout the city. 🎇🇺🇸🎉🎆

This new exhibit is one that local history enthusiasts and boaters will be interested in. It's all about the formation of the HdG Yacht Club and features a trophy and an original program dating back to the 1930s for the first annual regatta. We also have a refurbished Hampton One Design on display in the Boat Shop, very similar to one that belonged to one of the HdGYC's original members, Bob McVey.

It was a beautiful spring weekend, with over two dozen vendors selling handmade goods, as well as food and entertainment on the grounds of the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum. **Help Support the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery Memorial Campaign** @SSHMarinersGenealogy The Descendants of Sailors’ Snug Harbor Mariners have been reaching out to Historical and Genealogical Societies, Museums, Military Veterans Groups, and Concerned Citizens, to invite them to join a Letters of Support Campaign to support their efforts to gain access to the old Sailors’ Snug Harbor Cemetery on Staten Island, in New York City, to honor their Ancestors and all of the 6,500 Merchant and Naval Mariners interred there (1834-1976), by installing a Memorial Monument (Obelisk) and holding an annual Memorial Service. Some of the Mariners were famous Sea Captains and some sailed on famous Merchant and Naval ships dating back to the American Revolution. Many were just average seamen whom sailed and endured for many years on the sea under arduous conditions. The Mariners were from many areas of the United States, Canada, and foreign countries. https://www.findagrave.com/cemetery/2244490/sailors-snug-harbor-cemetery Sadly, the Sailors' Snug Harbor Cemetery is devoid of gravestones or markers, except for 15 remaining gravestones. The Cemetery is closed and not open to the public. The Board of Trustees of Sailors' Snug Harbor have rejected the Descendants' requests to access the SSH Cemetery to honor their Ancestors. https://nypost.com/2018/12/29/caretakers-shoot-down-plans-for-monument-for-fallen-sailors/ The Descendants are collecting Letters of Support to persuade the Trustees of Sailors’ Snug Harbor to change their decision. You can help support the Descendants by writing a Letter of Support using the Support Letter Writing Instructions at the following link: https://drive.google.com/open?id=1sZv5VFLNWw0HA-pW2i33RhbgVFQ6oExx Sailors’ Snug Harbor has a very interesting history. It was one of the first large scale retirement facilities in the United States and the first established for Merchant Mariners. It was founded by the Randall family whom were New York City Merchant Sea Captains and Privateers during the French Indian War and Patriots during the Revolutionary War. Alexander Hamilton was a friend of the Randall family and their Attorney. He helped draft the Robert Richard Randall Will in 1801 to create the SSH Trust which funded the SSH Retirement Home. During its 140+ years of operation (1833-1976) approximately 16,000 Mariners resided there. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sailors%27_Snug_Harbor

America’s Anchor is a regional naval history of the Delaware River and Bay, the cradle of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. The scope of the book spans three centuries in a tri-state area from early exploration to the end of World War II. It tells the exciting tale of the seaman of the Delaware Valley and the notable ships they sailed in peace and war. Some were famous naval heroes and others were nameless sailors and marines dating back centuries. America’s Anchor describes the various naval engagements fought over the years in the Delaware estuary and outside the Delaware Capes. It discusses the improvement in naval infrastructure such as lighthouses, canals, and navigational aids that made this possible. The Delaware river and bay was one of America’s premier shipbuilding centers where many technological advances were first employed. America’s Anchor includes the story of the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard, Delaware river and bay pilots, the U.S. Lifesaving Service and the role of the Coast Guard. $45 softcover (7 x 10) 88 photos, appendices, notes, bibliography, index ISBN 978-1-4766-7197-0 Ebook 978-1-4766-3435-7 2018 Author Kennard Wiggins is a retired military officer residing in Elkton Maryland. What flowers are good for butterflies and bees? I will plant them all in my yard.
Hi to all who may have attended story time at the Havre de Grace Maritime Museum Thursday! I have a favor to ask. During the craft portion of the morning the battery in my camera died. It was placed on the ledge near the door and after that I didn't think anymore about it. Even while loading the car and then unpacking all items upon return home never crossed my mind, until the next day. Retraced my steps around the house, no luck. Went to the museum to search the room (which was locked up upon our departure), no luck. Reviewed the pictures from snack time on my backup camera (that a friend was using) and saw that it was on the ledge in a couple of the pics. My hope is that it was accidentally picked up when folks were leaving, thinking it was theirs. While I am sad that I may have lost my camera, I am even sadder that the card had pics that I had yet to download to the computer. Of course those of particular interest to me are the ones of our grandkids. Please spread the word and if found, please message me. Thanks so much! Miss Sue
