In the early morning hours of March 15, 1697, Hannah Emerson Dustin, her six-day-old daughter, Martha, and midwife Mary Neff were kidnapped along with eleven others (including Hannah Bradley) in a Native American raid in Haverhill, Massachusetts during King William's War. The Dustin Farm was on modern-day Eudora Street and was burned in the attack. Twenty-seven citizens of Haverhill died, including relatives of Hannah: Thomas Emerson, his wife, Elizabeth and their children Timothy and Sarah. During the journey north, little Martha was killed. Thanks to the bravery of Hannah's husband, Thomas, he and all of their other eight children reached the Marsh Garrison safely. Though only a quarter mile away, the brick house we know today as the Duston-Dustin Garrison had not yet been completed, so they could not go there. We remember them all today.

A week ago, December 23rd, there was a silent remembrance marking the birth of Hannah Emerson Duston born in 1657.

This was closely followed by the celebration on December 25th of another significant birth.

Today is a day we begin again to reflect on how we might shape history.

A journey to 1697: On Tuesday, Goody Dustin (Jennifer Emerson) visited Woodbury Middle School (Salem, NH) and spoke with 100 8th graders in two 45-minute sessions. The students had written essays about Hannah, and thus prepared well-researched questions for her. They did not hold back, and even inquired her thoughts as to the fate of her poor sister, Elizabeth. Further perspective was added when she told them that as they are 14, they are approximately the same age as Samuel Lenordson, and Hannah's eldest son, Thomas. Goody Dustin also brought a few household items to teach them a little more about daily farm life. Many thanks to April Muraco for the invitation to speak to her most excellent students.

WELCOME to the HANNAH DUSTON-DUSTIN GARRISON , 665 Hilldale Ave, Haverhill, Mass. Open today and tomorrow, September 2nd and 3rd from 11 to 3. We are always proud to present a compassionate and comprehensive account of what we have learned of greater Haverhill's history in 1697. The Garrison was built by brickmaster, Thomas Duston, as a fort, for those seeking refuge. Hannah and her family made it their home when she returned from captivity, as their log home had been destroyed during the raid.

It is unfortunate that our lovely Jennifer Emerson, a great niece and portrayor of Hannah Duston will not be able to join us this weekend. She has been a bit under the weather. Our hearts are with her as we look forward to her presence in the near future.

FREE to all, however donations are accepted ~Diane Dustin Itasaka

I am so pleased and proud to have Robin and Don Hudson as part of our Hannah Duston team. These plantings came from their own home in Merrimac, MA. Come by and visit the beauty they are adding with the help of Team Haverhill who provided the raised beds. Free admission, as always, and open this weekend, August 5th and 6th from 11 to 3.
Feel free to call Diane Dustin Itasaka and leave a message with any questions at 978-430-4506. 🌻

While leaving the Hilldale Cemetery, we saw volunteers Robin and Don planting the new garden beds at Duston-Dustin Garrison House. They are adding antique plants to one garden bed and vegetables to the other. The historic plants would have been around in the same time period as the house (1697). How awesome is that!

A great turnout last evening to the 320th Anniversary Commemoration. Flowers were placed at the Garrison during a short service. We later enjoyed cookies and cornbread, beautiful music and a moving conversation with Goodwife Dustin in 1698. Thank you to all who arranged and attended.
