Duston-Dustin Garrison House

Duston-Dustin Garrison House In 1697, Thomas Duston of Haverhill, Massachusetts was helping to build this permanent, fortified structure where local Rangers ‘as full time soldiers’ would be stationed to provide warnings of impending raids.

This is one of six built in Haverhill. The museum is available to view by appointment only. It is currently free of charge however donations are welcome.

Operating as usual

Hello Everyone and Happy Autumn. The Garrison House remains closed for the time being for several reasons so thank you for your understanding. We have been working behind the scenes in supporting Hannah Duston's statue located in G.A.R. Park Haverhill. Tonight, I've been invited to speak at a special join committee meeting at city hall to give a voice to our fellow descendants, supporters and followers. I will share any recommendations or outcomes provided by the mayor. Wish us luck!!! And send good vibes!!! ~Diane Dustin Itasaka

The Duston-Dustin Garrison House volunteers, trustees and honorary 'family' members wish you all a safe and secure season. We miss our time this summer when we would normally be inviting you in and providing you with tours of this authentic, 323-year-old fort. We enjoy hearing how we are connected; the details of how we each fit into our own local history. While we wait for a safe time this season to re-open we hope that you will take some time to research your roots and, when possible, share them with us. Thank you to all who have supported us in spirit, in person and in giving. Also, thank you for your patience as, I realize, responses to your inquiries have been greatly delayed. Be Safe ~Diane Dustin Itasaka

This season tends to be a quiet time for our Duston-Dustin Garrison before we normally begin to prepare for our opening in June. We are full of hope as we wish everyone a Happy Easter...one of renewal and reflection. This monument -- fortress -- stands as a reminder of a time when isolation required brick, shutters and hiding spaces. We look forward to welcoming you with open arms. Be well...Be safe. 💜~Diane Dustin Itasaka and my devoted Trustees and Volunteers🙏🌷

Today is not a day of judgment, but of remembrance. According to several written accounts over the past centuries, today marks the day when Hannah Emerson Duston, her midwife Mary Neff, and Hannah’s six-day-old daughter, Martha, were taken from the Duston home in Haverhill, Massachusetts during a raid. Hannah’s husband, Thomas, a veteran of King Philip’s War, conducted their eight other children to safety. As the captives were led over 60 miles to an island in New Hampshire, Martha did not survive the journey.
The stories engraved in the statues depict the horror at that time. But there is far more to study and share about a 39-year-old Puritan Englishwoman and life in 1690s New England than popular culture dictates. When the current health crisis is abated, our intrepid volunteers at the Duston-Dustin Garrison look forward to the honor of your visit. For further reading, we recommend Jay Atkinson’s book, Massacre on the Merrimack.
History is the study of choices – so we can make better ones.

03/15/2019

In the early morning hours of March 15, 1697, Hannah Emerson Dustin, her six-day-old daughter, Martha, and midwife Mary Neff were kidnapped along with eleven others (including Hannah Bradley) in a Native American raid in Haverhill, Massachusetts during King William's War. The Dustin Farm was on modern-day Eudora Street and was burned in the attack. Twenty-seven citizens of Haverhill died, including relatives of Hannah: Thomas Emerson, his wife, Elizabeth and their children Timothy and Sarah. During the journey north, little Martha was killed. Thanks to the bravery of Hannah's husband, Thomas, he and all of their other eight children reached the Marsh Garrison safely. Though only a quarter mile away, the brick house we know today as the Duston-Dustin Garrison had not yet been completed, so they could not go there. We remember them all today.

A week ago, December 23rd, there was a silent remembrance marking the birth of Hannah Emerson Duston born in 1657.

This was closely followed by the celebration on December 25th of another significant birth.

Today is a day we begin again to reflect on how we might shape history.

I was disappointed to read this quote by Diane Dustin Itasaka who is associated with the house in the linked story: “I want people to know that Hannah or any of the other women, children, babies, and men who had gone through any raid like this, if she really did do the unthinkable, it wasn’t because they were natives but because they were her captors,” claims Itasaka. “If the French had captured her, it would have been the French. It wasn’t because they were native.” My review of History- perhaps not extensive enough- can not find any examples or information to suggest that white persons scalped other white persons. In fact the History suggests that Whites were paid to scalp natives. I do not doubt that if Hannah had been captured by the French she would have sought to escape and may have even killed her captors, but isn't it questionable that she would have scalped them and a statue erected depicting her holding those scalps? In my opinion, Hannah is important, this history is important. She was a woman, living in her time and she acted in ways that today we might find objectionable, but she was just trying to survive. That said, what is the historical basis for suggesting that if the French had captured her, she would have scalped them?
What a great day we had for our special event at the Dustin Garrison. A complete success. Big turnout of visitors. A huge shout out and thank you for all our volunteer helpers who were there. We couldn't have accomplished it without you because so much work went into it. I sit here now partaking of one of the leftover goodies and feeling emotional because I miss everyone already and it hasn't even been one day.

Thank you Diane for the wonderful tour of the Garrison House today. I appreciate the time you spent talking with me today and showing me this wonderful piece of history. It was well worth the drive to be able to go inside and see and walk where my ancestors once lived.
It's Nancy Wilson's birthday on March 16th. Nancy's Mom was a Dustin and she is a descendent of Hannah Dustin. Happy Birthday Nancy!
322 years ago today Hannah Duston was taken captive. I remember my 7th great grandmother's ordeal, as I am sure her many descendants do.
Is the annual reunion 8/10/19 ? I am making plans to attend. Lois Chamberlain, [email protected] Thank you.

Enjoyed our visit to Hannah's house yesterday. Here is Goodwife Dustin (re-enactor Jennifer Emerson) teaching my granddaughter about the hard realities of life in 1697 New England...candles, fireplaces, and chamberpots. 😲
