So many things are showing up in our two native pastures here in SE O'Brien County - I haven't been able to follow up with the camera...maybe I'll get a chance soon? Been very busy working with our south pasture, doing support work with the winter seeding, plus some Leafy Spurge follow up work in the north pasture and several other things.

But as you approach the pastures here, or as you drive by, most obvious are the Golden Alexanders...some parts are blanketed with it , while other parts are spotted with that characteristic yellow. There's a lot more blooming there and I hope I can share those in the days and weeks ahead.

Georgie and I have participated in a Wildlife Diversity Program through the DNR since 1994. We get a lot of kidding when friends hear we're part of the "Iowa Frog and Toad Survey", and that it's considered "Date Night" for us both. After all, who doesn't enjoy taking their Sweetheart out on deserted gravel roads to park by a pond or stream in the starlight! 😉

Here's a short audio production from our "Date Night" last Thursday evening - Enjoy!

Loving the Poppies around the camera feeder…they just do not last when the heat hits…tonight these were all done 🙁

Have another new camera feeder species today! A first year male Baltimore Oriole!

No, they don’t eat sunflower seeds, but they are curious and check every feeder out at least once. They do occasionally eat suet, and they also hog the studio Hummingbird nectar feeder, but of course the jelly feeders are their favorite.

There was a male Indigo Bunting trying to get on the camera feeder but a male Rose-breasted would not allow it! Hope it gets lucky before moving on!

Yippy Skippy! Georgie and I went for a short golf cart ride down the gravel and the Dickcissels are back!!! Had a couple out front singing along with a couple Bobolinks - then we went out back along the neighbor's pasture fence line and a couple more were singing their names! I'm as happy as this old guy dare be!

To celebrate I'm re-posting my color pencil rendition of the Prairie Hill Farm Summer Academy - Dickcissel Class of 2022!!!

Yesterday I found the Fringed Puccoon (Lithospermum incisum) in the pastures, really breaking out! They are a bit late like everything else because of the late burn in April but are looking amazing. It makes it so much easier to see where they have been moving over the past few years, when the surrounding grasses and forbs are also short and just catching up. (photographs - ©Bruce A. Morrison)

Wild ride - had rotation just 2-3 miles east of us…have had some loud hail…loads of wind and lightning - need the rain so much but not the bad stuff of course. Hoping for the best until this passes.

Showing our radar - rotation was indicated in the vicinity of that “hook” that was just to our east (it has passed - that was 10 minutes ago - heading up between Everly and Spencer now) - for reference - we’re the Blue dot.
