: On February 5, 1918, Connecticut’s famous four-legged war hero, Sgt. Stubby, entered World War I when the 102nd Infantry Regiment deployed to Chemin des Dames, along the Eastern boarder of France.
Throughout the war, Sgt. Stubby survived more than seventeen battles. But he did more than just improve the morale of the troops. After being injured by mustard gas, he was outfitted with his very own custom gas mask and learned to give early warnings when a poisonous gas attack was incoming. He was even solely responsible for the capture of a German soldier mapping out the allied trenches – earning him the rank of sergeant, the first dog to be officially given rank by the U.S. Armed Forces.
After the war, Stubby became a national celebrity, meeting three sitting presidents (Woodrow Wilson, Calvin Coolidge, and Warren Harding), became the Georgetown University mascot, and appeared on stage several times.
