James Lewis - Decoys & Art

James Lewis - Decoys & Art Decoy Carver and Wildfowl Artist Welcome to my page. My name is James Lewis I’m a self-taught decoy carver and flat art artist.

Native to Harkers Island, NC I am a true Harkers Islander Born and Bred. This is where I grew up in a rich environment of traditionally living off the land and water of Core Sound. My Great-grandfather was a market hunter around 1900 and would carve his own decoys to hunt with. A 4th generation hunter I have been hunting for over 34 years myself (since I was 7) and carving on and off for about 29

of those years. I would carve duck decoys and shorebirds out of Juniper (White Cedar) Scraps left over from boat construction. Coming from a family of boat builders (also my full time occupation) the juniper scrap was readily available. I have been into serious carving since 2004. Mostly I prefer to carve Ducks but I also do some Shorebirds. I like to carve out of Tupelo, Balsa, Cork, and Canvas. I have won many 1st, 2nd and 3rd Place ribbons at different competitions throughout the country as well as a Best of Show. I also do some Wildfowl Art and Photography. The surrounding area of Core Sound and Cape Lookout has played a major impact in my art. As my paintings often include the Cape Lookout Light House, Duck Blinds or the old style Work Boats found around Core Sound. I am also a lifetime member of the International Wildfowl Carvers Association (IWCA). I currently serve on the Board of Directors of the Core Sound Decoy Carvers Guild where I am also the Show Chairman for the Core Sound Decoy Festival which is held at the Harkers Island Elementary School the first weekend of December each year.

Mike Lubbock of Sylvan Heights Bird Park has Passed. Please keep his Family in your Thoughts and Prayers!

We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Mike Lubbock MBE, co-founder of Sylvan Heights Bird Park, early this morning. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends, and the many people from around the world with whom he so willingly shared his knowledge and passion for birds.

Mike dedicated his life and career to the care and conservation of the world’s birds, particularly waterfowl. He has left a lasting legacy through his tremendous contributions to aviculture, through the many people he mentored, and through Sylvan Heights Bird Park, where his work will continue to inspire future generations of conservationists.
