This weeks flag could not have worked out any more perfectly if I had planned it I wish I could say I did but it just fell in to line with the museum. It is the Star spangled banner flag which was used during the war of 1812 time era the 15 star, 15 stripe U.S. flag that inspired Francis Scott Key to write the national anthem after the battle of Baltimore in 1814. I say this because on May 30, 1814 during the war of 1812, Admiral George Cockburn’s British forces launched a raid on Pungoteague Creek the operation was part of a broader British campaign to disrupt American coastal defenses and supply lines. In the Harborton History Museum we have one of those cannon balls fired from that battle on Pungoteague Creek on permanent display it is believed to be one of the only cannon balls recovered from Pungoteague Creek and one the rare few recovered from the Eastern Shore during the war of 1812 era.
