Harborcreek Historical Society

Harborcreek Historical Society The Society collects, preserves and interprets the history of Harborcreek Township, Pennsylvania. We are located in the historic Gifford-Blanchfield House.

In 1994, Township Supervisors appointed Judy Wieczorek and Beth Simmons to initiate a project for the Erie Bicentennial in 1995. The Harborcreek Historical Society was then created and incorporated with 22 charter members. Charter members laid the foundation for the Society through By-Laws; others wrote folios on Harborcreek topics and developed the Central School print, which was used for the not

e cards and other items. The signature project was the restoration of the Gospel Hill Burial Ground. Today the Historical Society is the caretaker of the Burial Ground. This site contains the graves of early settlers including Thomas Rees, surveyor and early owner of township land. Other Harborcreek families buried there are: Bonnell, Sewell, and Tuttle. Each year historical programs are scheduled for members and the public is welcome. We work together with the Lawrence Park Historical Society, the Erie County History Center and Wesleyville, which was part of Harborcreek Township until May 31, 1912. The Society is part of ERIE YESTERDAY; this is a network of county historical societies and museums which promote local history. Furthermore, we participate with the Harborcreek Township Supervisiors, the Harbor Creek School District & the Harborcreek Chamber of Commerce for community events. The Historical Society is maintained and grows through the efforts and generosity of the Harborcreek community. We list tribute or memorial donations in our newsletter. We accept historical donations with reference to the Harborcreek area. We have received yearbooks, family histories, lots of photographs, reference books, news articles, artwork of various landmarks, and school memorabilia. The archives are accessible to members and the general public. Presently there are over 200 members living in Pennsylvania and 21 other states.

The Jefferson Educational Society - at the Harborcreek Municipal Building - is hosting "The French Expeditions to Lake Erie: An American Legacy" May 13, 2026 6:00 - 7:30 PM with David Frew, Ph.D.

Register for free at: https://www.jeserie.org/events/details/harborcreek-satellite-the-french-expeditions-to-lake-erie-an-american-legacy

Program Description: An 18th Century betting person might have predicted that North America would have become French as opposed to British, Spanish, or a brand-new, independent country: The United States. Lake Erie was a frenetic epicenter of French activities that surrounded the conflict and turmoil between political forces that shaped the region. Much of the direct influence has disappeared from collective memory, but we continue to experience dozens of historic French contributions.

Join us as JES Scholar-in-Residence Dr. David Frew details the primary regional French contributions and weaves them into a story that continues through modern times. His integration of French influences will spark curiosities and suggest exciting new explorations.
