In 1881 the town of Little Traverse was incorporated under a new name - Harbor Springs. Town leaders hoped the name would better convey to tourists the incredible natural features of our area including our deep, natural harbor and the many artesian wells and springs that dot the landscape. This fountain on Main Street takes advantage of one of those artesian wells. #harborsprings #puremichigan #localhistory

The stone shelter and memorial fountain in Zorn Park were designed by local architect Earl Mead and dedicated during a two day festival in August 1920. The dedication included the unveiling of a bronze plaque with the names of soldiers who died during WWI.

In 1951 a plaque with the names of soldiers who gave their lives during World War II was added. #harborsprings #learnlocal #localhistory #zornpark #harborhistorymuseum

Harbor Springs Area Historical Society

The Harbor Springs Area Historical Society (HSAHS) was founded in 1990 by a small group of concerned citizens committed to preserving the history of our community. For much of our history, HSAHS was a small, volunteer-run organization with limited paid staff. Board members and community members volunteered their time to host the annual Shay Days celebration as well as to welcome visitors to the summer reading room at Jo Ford Park.

In the last ten years, HSAHS has expanded to include a full-time executive director, a diverse and full board of trustees and a reputation for hosting outstanding historically based programs and events. In addition, the organization embarked on a incredible journey to adaptively reuse the former city hall building as a local history museum.

Today, our reputation for strong historical programs continues inside the doors of the Harbor Springs History Museum where exceptional exhibits and hands-on activities will continue to tell the story of Harbor Springs' unique history.

Together the HSAHS trustees and staff are constantly working toward the organization's vision: to ensure Harbor Springs area traditions live on by creating lasting memories.
