Do you have an old football uniform in your attic? How about a ticket from homecoming or prom? We are looking for any item that can help tell the story of high school life.

We are saddened to hear that Terry Pepper passed away Saturday, February 23. Through his role as the first executive director of the Great Lakes Lighthouse Keepers Association, Terry worked closely with the Historical Society during our triennial tours of the Little Traverse Lighthouse, checking our history, offering advice and giving programs here at the museum (pictured here in 2014). He was the foremost authority on Great Lakes lighthouse history, but he was also truly and deeply a lover of lighthouses. Terry will be greatly missed.

The Historical Society is closed today due to inclement weather. We apologize for any inconvenience. For your snow day enjoyment, here is a hearty winter crew, circa 1940, standing in front of Hovey's Pharmacy on Main Street. This ran on the cover of our recent newsletter leading Ed Meyer to share that his dad Louis "Red" Meyer is at far left front, and George Coveyou shared that his grandfather George Hartung is in the back row left of the skis. Who do you recognize?

Celebrating Traditions

Interested in learning more about Harbor Springs holiday traditions? Check out this blog post from 2015 when we celebrated the 100th anniversary of having a community Christmas tree on Main Street.

Harbor Springs loves its traditions particularly those associated with holidays. In 2015, we celebrated the 100th anniversary of a community Christmas tree placed in town, a tradition started by local contractor George B. Hartung. As a young man, Hartung cut and hauled a Christmas tree into downtown...

11/11/2018

Originally known as Armistice Day, Veterans Day is celebrated every year on November 11 to commemorate the end of WWI. 100 years ago today major hostilities ended when an armistice with Germany went into effect.

In 1954 the holiday was expanded to honor all veterans, not just those who served during WWI, and the name was changed. Today, the Historical Society is proud to honor all who have fought for our country. #VeteransDay #HarborHistory
