Our next Martin-Leese lecture is all about early Hanover manufacturers!

In 1899, the Hanover Match Company was the largest factory employer in Hanover and 13th largest employer in York County. Pennsylvania classified 479 businesses within York County as factories; for the year 1899. Within the county, Hanover had the second highest concentration; at 40 factories.

Stephen Smith will offer a brief exploration of the whole list of forty 19th Century Hanover Factories- a research project that uncovered a high number of neat finds! The free program is Tuesday, September 8 at 7 pm at the Warehime-Myers Mansion. RSVP to [email protected] or call at 717-632-3207.

Stephen H. Smith retired as a Manager of Design Engineering at York International Corp. He earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in mechanical engineering from Penn State. He is a Registered Professional Engineer in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and chairman of the Springettsbury Township Historic Preservation Committee. He wrote an award-winning family history and, during his retirement, continues to write and give family history and local history talks.

Ok, Hanover history detectives! Can you identify this 1700s log house? We know it stood along Carlisle Street on a site that later occupied Hanover Shoe. We'd love more info!

Our Museum Committee volunteers work to identify mysteries like this each week. Want to be a part of the team? Contact us to find out how you can volunteer!
