The museum's collection features over 9,000 objects including African American fine arts, traditional African, Native American, Hawaiian, Pacific Island, and Asian art; and objects relating to the history of the University. Larger than any other museum in the country, is Hampton's collection of works from renowned African American artists such as John Biggers, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence, Richmond Barthé, and Samella Lewis. Emancipation came to different regions at different times. This pen, on display at Hampton University Museum, was used by President Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to sign the first of three proclamations which emancipated enslaved African Americans. We recognize Juneteenth as the day in 1865 when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas to ensure all enslaved people were free.
