On this day, 116 years ago, while being piloted by Glenn Curtiss, U.S. Army Lieutenant Jacob E. Fickel fired a rifle at a target from an altitude of 100 feet above Sheepshead Bay Racetrack, NY. This would be the first shot fired from an airplane, signaling the birth of combat aviation.

We’re excited to be part of Summer Cycle 2026 today at the Hammondsport Fire Department! Come check out the motorcycles, enjoy the festivities, and stop by the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum booth while you’re there!

Along with the Hammondsport Glider and the June Bug already on display at the Museum, the Dart helps tell the story of the Aerial Experiment Association.
