Dollie hates to go out in the rain, so of course I got her a cute raincoat hoping that would help. It didn’t 🤣…but she is awfully cute. 🥰

I added a door.

They made it a lookout station. 🥹🐾

Now every morning starts with Buddy and Dollie soaking up the sunshine and keeping an eye on the backyard. I adopted this sweet bonded pair earlier this year from Hamburg Mutts For Freedom 💝

All three of these sweet babies came to me via rescue. Buddy and Dollie as a bonded pair from someone who was no longer physically able to care for them, and Pippin who was a puppy mill rescue. They are all full bred “designer” dogs. If you are considering adding a pet to your family, please consider adoption before breeders. 💕

On May 27, 2002, my mother went in for surgery for a brain aneurysm and never woke up.

Then, on May 27, 2024, my sweet Zack left this world at almost 20 years old. Twenty years. What a gift. But what a heartbreak. 💔

And last year, not long after losing my best friend Elizabeth, we lost her beloved Lucy too. Another piece of my little family gone.

For years, Memorial Day weekend wrecked me. I dreaded it. I braced for it. I would spiral into grief before the weekend even arrived.

But something has shifted.

Now the sadness feels softer. Still there. Still real. But softer.

I find myself comforted by the thought that the people and souls we love do not simply disappear. I carry them with me every day. In songs. In smells. In old photos. In quiet moments when the house feels too still.

And strangely, this date no longer feels like proof of loss.

It feels like proof of love.

Because grief this deep only exists when love was extraordinary.

So today, I’m choosing gratitude. For my mother. For Elizabeth. For Zack. For Lucy. For every moment I was lucky enough to have with them.

Time is never guaranteed. Not for any of us.

Love your people loudly while they’re here. And when they’re gone, keep loving them anyway.
