The MP&RE committee is responsible for restoring and maintaining the locomotives and rolling stock owned by the RCT&HS. We use this page to update its viewers on the status of our projects and to offer them a chance to provide constructive feedback. You can find project details under within our ALBUMS under PHOTOS. Restoration is a big part of the work our volunteers do at our museum in H

amburg. We are always looking for new volunteers who want to get involved in this regards. Special skills are not required as we will help you find the role or roles that will make this work as rewarding to you and it is to us.

We had several teams working today. Team one went searching for some items needed to finish our caboose. Steve found the missing grab irons for the roof, and started cleaning and paint prepping them. John finished prepping the interior for paint and got some primer on part of the walls. Paul and Don got the stencils for the lettering and numbering in place and outlined the lettering with white acrylic paint pens. I think we got the fonts correct this time. 🚂🎨👍💪🔨🚧👏💥🔩🔧

Our dedicated volunteers were at it again today. The focus was on the roof, and things were looking up (pun intended).

The only thing we could not finish was the grab irons that go at the top of each end ladder. I hope we can find two that will fit.

Something a little different today. I brought our parade locomotive home today, to get it parade worthy. It got re-engined over the winter, to take care of an overheating issue. So this was its road rest.

We just keep chipping away at all the little things to do to make our little wood caboose look just right.

It was a gloomy day in Hamburg today, but in spite of the weather, we got quite a bit done.
Paul worked on the interior window frames and end kick plates. John worked on prepping the interior for painting.

A good day with 92938. Lettering has started with "READING" on the east side. Our fabulous lettering painter might add a photo or two to this post a little later. We also got a coat of thick black paint on the roof. As you might know, the roofs on the wood sided cabooses were black (vs. brown) due to the roof coating applied over the wood roofs.

Got some painting done on Tuesday. Finished primer on the roof. Roof edges painted black. Note the clown on the roof.

The guys were busy again today working on our Hershey Caboose. With the window frames in place, we were able to get the frames painted. In preparation for painting the roof, we painted the roof edges from a ladder so that we didn't have to hang over the roof edge to paint those edges (think safety). We also got one end of the caboose base boards in place. Next up, prime and paint the roof. After that we expect to get some lettering completed. Great team effort today in spite of the rain outside.

Window framing complete. Saturday we got the cupola end window sills and exterior framing installed. Today we did the same for the cupola side windows. It was the most challenging given all the angles. So glad that's done, and it's time for all that window framing to get some red paint. We'll likely hold off on installing the sash until we can paint their interior surfaces the proper color, i.e., Railway Company's standard buff station paint, per John Hall's book on RDG cabooses.
