We would like to say a special thank you to all of those who donated to the ByHaines Disaster Relief Program. Through the help of Alaska Marine Lines, Brian Staurseth, Robert Venables, Margaret Friedenhauer, John Rinehart, Edward & Janis Buyarski, Irene Rowan, Jennifer Allen, Lisa Gable, and many others we were able to quickly turn donations into business vouchers which displaced residents could use immediately for food, clothing, holiday needs, etc. These funds not only benefited the victims, but the money stayed right here in Haines, thus benefiting local businesses. You can call it disaster relief the ByHaines way!

We also want to thank these displaced residents for sharing their stories with us as they came into the Chamber. We were probably the ones who were blessed the most in the exchange. Your stories of courage and perseverance inspired us! We will continue to work with displaced residents and find local solutions for immediate needs.

The Haines Chamber of Commerce is a 501 c(6) nonprofit in Haines that has been running a successful shop local campaign in partnership with the Haines Economic Development Corporation. Since October the byHAINES Shop Local & Save Program put more than $250,000 into the hands of local businesses.

We are beyond grateful for donations we have received outside of our community to help displaced Haines residents. These are also very difficult times for our local businesses to stay open and employ our friends and neighbors throughout this winter while recovering from overlapping disasters. Instead of sending physical donations, please consider donating instead to local businesses that can supply necessities and holiday gift items to displaced families.

To facilitate donations to Haines’s businesses and to ensure that dollars are spent locally, the Haines Chamber will be extending its gift voucher program. Displaced residents that are currently receiving services will qualify to receive gift vouchers that can be used at all participating businesses. The program is designed for discretionary purchases but will be expanded to include groceries.

We are finalizing the details of this program and will have additional information for applicants and businesses next week. In the meantime, we need your donations. This contribution will not only help our displaced residents who cannot return to their homes, it will also help our struggling small businesses stay afloat during this latest disaster.

Your donation to the Haines Chamber of Commerce will go to the byHAINES Shop Local Campaign. Please make donations HERE:
