If you're in the Woodbury area tomorrow morning I'll be a guest speaker at the dedication event for Civil War veteran Isaac J. Hill. Hill was enlisted in the 29th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry, the same regiment as Mount Peace Cemetery's Alexander Heritage Newton. In fact, they were not only comrades, but they were very good friends who both wrote autobiographies about their respective experiences during the fight for African American equality!

Please join me and Alex Breanne who is a Connecticut Independent Scholar, and responsible for Isaac J. Hill's new headstone.

This Memorial Day postcard dated May 30, 1909 is from “Aunt Clara” to Clarence Jarvis. “Aunt Clara” was Clara Johnson-Van Sciver (b. 1863; d. 1927) who was the wife of George D. Van Sciver. George was the brother of Clarence’s mother Annie Van Sciver-Jarvis. George and Joseph B. Van Sciver were also brothers and partners in the Hainesport Mining & Transportation Corporation, later consolidated into the Van Sciver Corporation, at the time the largest manufacturer and distributor of building materials in Eastern Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. Their sand and gravel products were used in the construction of subways, banks, office building and piers.
Clara died in 1927. The business was sold in 1929 and George retired, later remarrying and moving to Arizona in 1934; he died in Arizona in 1942. (Tap on the image to expand it to full size.)
