Step through time as you explore and learn about Colonial, Greek Revival, Carpenter Gothic, Second Empire, Depression-Era, and Mid-Century Modern architecture and homes.

Featured stops are open to ticketed guests for one day only, so don't miss this chance!

Our final featured house for the upcoming “Colonial to Contemporary” house tour is... a house of worship! Higganum and Haddam’s architectural landscape includes many churches, each with their own story to tell. Built between 1871 and 1873, St. James Episcopal Church is an excellent example of the Carpenter Gothic Revival style. Characteristics of Gothic Revival include the steeply pitched gable-to-street roof and the pointed arched windows.

In stark contrast to the grandeur of Second Empire construction, the Great Depression brought changes in not only the way Americans lived, but also in the way they built. Depression era homes were constructed in the “minimal tradition”, usually a small, one-story cape style dwelling and built for affordability and functionality. Higganum is home to a c.1930s depression era cottage lovingly nicknamed “The Dollhouse”.

Explore the mark different homeowners made on this structure through the years, including a retro green bathroom c.1960, at our upcoming house tour! Who loves a good Mansard roof?! We sure do!! Our upcoming house tour features a gorgeous Second Empire house, built in the early 1870s by Nathan Fuller. The popularity of this architectural style, common between 1860 and 1900, reflected the public’s interest in the picturesqueness and asymmetry of new styles being introduced in America including Gothic Revival and Italianate.

🌊 Our piece of Connecticut was once home to Noah Dickinson, a sailing captain and true man of the sea who “hated steam, bicycles, and horses”. He built a c.1845 Greek Revival style dwelling in Haddam that eventually changed hands to another sea captain, and in the later 1800s became a Parsonage.
