You can huff and puff but you can't blow this building down. Join us today and tomorrow for Cell Block Tales at the Historic Middlesex County Jail in Haddam, 945 Saybrook Road. Tours start at 12pm, 1pm, 2 pm and 3 pm. Parking in lot across the street and at Annex Building up the hill. Tickets are available at the door.

Cell Block Tales: Tour the Jail and Meet the Prisoners
Saturday, September 26, 2026 -12 noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm
Sunday, September 27, 2026- 12 noon, 1 pm, 2 pm and 3 pm

The Haddam Historical Society, in collaboration with local theater group Blue Fire Stage Company, invites you to step inside the historic Haddam Jail cellblock for a unique journey into the past. On Saturday, September 26, and Sunday, September 27, 2026 visitors will tour the historic cellblock and meet some of the infamous men and women who were incarcerated in the Haddam Jail during the 19th and 20th centuries.
Local actors and volunteers will portray real prisoners who were jailed for various crimes including arson, bigamy, and murder. Come and hear their stories, learn their fates and see the inside of this fascinating historic landmark known locally as the “country club”.
Admission is $12 for non-members and $10 for members. For tickets use the QR code below
Tours will start on the hour starting at 12 noon and last approximately 45 minutes.

In 1868 Mrs. Harper was jailed in Haddam for forgery. She was well known throughout the northeast and mid-west as a check forger and swindler. She had many aliases and was a familiar character in Boston, New York and Chicago.
She would scam banks by cashing checks with “spilled ink” on it by her “young daughter.” She would take some in cash and deposit the rest. Later she would return and withdraw the deposit. She frequently changed the amounts of legit checks to higher amounts.
Mrs. Harper was arrested in Middletown for forging a $9.25 check to $92.75. She was imprisoned in the Haddam Jail and was able to escape by picking the lock to her room and running down to the river where she caught a boat to New York City.
She was re-arrested and sentenced to five years in prison for her crimes.
