New to the Collection this week.
Sealskin pocketbook owned by Revolutionary War soldier James Brooks of Haddam. Brooks served as a member of the elite Washington’s Life Guard who served as General Washington’s bodyguards. You had to be 20 to 30 years old, five feet eight inches or taller, robust constitution, well limbed and a man of established character. Legend indicates that he was captured by the British seven times and escaped seven times. Donated by descendants Camilla and Mark Cane, Patrick Stone and Charles Stone.

Various year books from Haddam Jr. High School dating from the 1960s and 1970s. Donation also included an early rendering of the Haddam Jr. High School and a 1976 Bicentennial Flag. Donated by Dan Olver.

Register yourself or a group to follow the clues, visit local landmarks, and uncover stories that shaped our town’s 250 years of American history.

Complete the “hunt” at their your own pace, then email your completed entry to [email protected] NO LATER THAN 11:59pm on 8/31/26.

We'd like to express our deepest gratitude to Sue and Dale DiCarli for hosting our junior members at their farm today for our Hay, Hooves, & Haddam program. What a treat to watch local blacksmith Derek Collins of Torch and Steel at his craft, and many thanks to him for braving the heat along with Jeremy DiCarli who taught the kids about maple sugaring!

Haddam Historical Society has received a generous $2517 grant from the Community Foundation of Middlesex County made possible by the Edmund T. And Barbara S. Delaney Fund to create a children’s program exploring the evolution of style, and the use and technology of clothing from early America to the 20th century. The program will explore the cultural history of clothing and how changing roles in society, advances in textile production and cultural influences drove fashion etiquette.

The grant will be used to plan this new program and additional programming for Girl and Boy Scouts, plus allow us to acquire reproduction clothing from various periods. This opportunity will allow program participants to experience firsthand the different types of clothing used by people throughout history and hopefully instill respect for those who came before us and appreciation of the hardships they endured. The first program is scheduled for October 2026.

Haddam Historical Society Susann Costa Memorial Scholarship

On July 29, 2026, the Haddam Historical Society presented its annual scholarship award to Chloe Felder, recent graduate of Haddam-Killingworth High School.

The Scholarship has been renamed in honor of long-time member and scholarship founder, Susann Costa who passed away in November of last year. Sue was deeply committed to advancing the education of deserving students while emphasizing the importance of history and its impact both locally and globally. She worked tirelessly to ensure the scholarship’s success and longevity through fundraising efforts and community support.

Chloe, who will be attending the University of Connecticut in Storrs this fall, was presented the award in the gardens of the Thankful Arnold House Museum by David Costa and Andrew Costa, Sue’s husband and son. Chloe, the daughter of Keryn Felder of Higganum, was a member of the National Honor Society, Peer Advocates Club, and the Spanish Honor Society. She also captained the Girls High School Soccer team and Girls Indoor/Outdoor Track Team. We wish her success in her future academic endeavors.

✨Croquet & Chardonnay 2026✨

Thank you to the many hands who made this event come to life again this year, including the planning committee and volunteers, our generous hosts, silent auction donors, and all of the wonderful guests! The afternoon started with raindrops but quickly shifted to sunshine, laughter, full bellies, and a fierce croquet competition. Congratulations to Bill Schneider on winning the coveted Golden Mallet for his exceptional croquet performance, and to our hat contest winners!
