Of History (1419 27th Avenue). We will review upcoming museum events, the wide range of volunteer opportunities that are available (lots more than giving tours) and provide a chance for new volunteers to talk with current volunteers to get a feel for what all is happening at the Museum!

Mark your calendar for December 10 at 6:00 PM at the Depot (1419 27th Avenue) - a very special program is planned for our December meeting. In addition to a bit of Christmas cheer, we will be joined by students from the Gulfport and Harrison County gifted student programs who will make presentations on their Living Life Locally projects. Living Life Locally (see our page) will be on November 7 and promises to be a major step in bringing the humanities to the forefront for these gifted students of our area.

Major and his sister, Pearl, both African penguins born right here in Gulfport (with Major being the first ever African penguin born in Mississippi…he made HISTORY), were the stars of the night at the Historical Society’s October meeting. With them were penguin Animal Care Specialists Chelsea and Sara who provided info and fun facts about the penguins, the penguin program at the Mississippi Aquarium and tales of Major and his antics, and answered a TON of questions! Major and Pearl strolled around the room learning a bit about Gulfport History, too! Peggy Schloegel rolled off the board after many years of service, and Anne Marie Hernandez was elected to a three year term in the board. Congrats, Anne Marie and many thanks to Peggy for her stalwart dedication! All proposed by-law amendments passed.

A fitting tribute to an accomplished son of Gulfport!

Thursday morning, Hancock Whitney unveiled a life-size bronze sculpture of former Gulfport mayor George A. Schloegel downtown.

Hancock Whitney says the sculpture honors the life of the longtime banking and community leader Schloegel, “creating a permanent tribute to one of the Gulf Coast’s most influential civic and business leaders.”

The sculpture is located at the west entrance of the company’s headquarters at Hancock Whitney Plaza, and it depicts Schloegel seated and facing the 15-story corporate tower he helped design and build in the late 1970s and where he spent more than half of his 50-year banking career. >> https://www.wlox.com/2026/10/08/sculpture-former-mayor-george-schloegel-unveiled-downtown-gulfport/

Some friends will join him as well to tell us about the Mississippi Aquarium’s penguins and the penguin program as well as the plans for a new penguin habitat at the Aquarium. We’ll be at the Gulfport Museum of History in the Depot (1419 27th Avenue) in downtown. We will also consider a few by-laws changes and elect a new member to the Board of the HSOG! What historic revitalization is needed in Downtown Gulfport?

🎉 Mississippi Main Street Association (MMSA) has been awarded the Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant in the amount of $750,000 through the Historic Preservation Fund administered by the National Park Service, Department of the Interior.

“The Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant gives Mississippi Main Street the opportunity to help communities breathe new life into historic places while creating opportunities for small businesses, investment, and long-term economic vitality," said Jeannie Waller Zieren, MMSA Executive Director. "We are excited to offer this grant program to our Designated Main Street Communities which further reinforces the power of Main Street to strengthen communities across Mississippi.”

The grant will be subgranted to applicants from Mississippi Main Street designated communities for historic rehabilitation projects in downtown districts.

The Gulfport Museum of History is super pumped to be the venue for the inaugural Living Life Local event, a “science fair for history” sponsored by the Gulfport School District and the Harrison County School District. Over 1000 students and their families are expected for this 4 hour event starting at 10:00 AM on November 7. We can’t wait to welcome them to DOWNTOWN GULFPORT!
