EcoSlo will be hosting their 21st annual SLO County Creeks to Coast cleanup on Saturday September 19th and we are joining them to facilitate a clean up at Oso Flaco Lake!

This event covers not just coastlines but also our beloved creeks, lakes, and parks across San Luis Obispo County. Last year this event removed over 7,300 pounds of trash from these natural areas. As many of you know, The Dunes Center has so much love for the amazing landscapes of Oso Flaco Lake. With 5 different plant communities, this area creates unique habitat to numerous species that characterize our Guadalupe-Nipomo dunes. Being a host for this event is so special as we are able to give back some care and love to this area which has given our organization so much throughout the years.

In collaboration with The Land Conservancy, explore the breathtaking Black Lake Ecological Area in celebration of Kathleen Goddard Jones’ birthday. The Land Conservancy has owned this area since 2000 and has continuously worked to restore its natural beauty and allowed The Dunes Center to bring our community to explore the local wildlife, as well as rare and endemic plant species.

Another beautiful day out at Point Sal!

We are ever inspired by this gorgeous area and all the life that calls it home! Protecting this wild space now ensures our ocean stays resilient far into the future. That is why we’re calling on the CA Fish & Game Commission to approve the Point Sal State Marine Conservation Area! Don’t miss another chance to experience how incredibly biologically rich Point Sal is!

As decades of progress in ocean conservation is threatened, California has the opportunity, and responsibility to lead. Expanding marine protected areas is not only good for the environment, it would help to boost coastal resilience, tourism, and sustain healthy fisheries!

Come enjoy this early summer sunshine on a hike to Point Sal! This magical area is rich ecologically and historically, carrying many of our region’s most formative stories. When we heard there was a chance to protect this area, we knew we had to be part of this cause.

The Dunes Center is advocating for the protection of Point Sal via a State Marine Conservation Area. Point Sal being a rather remote area provides an opportunity to enhance protection of:
🌱thriving seabird and marine mammal communities
🌿important area for baby fish and invertebrates
🍃Indigenous cultural resources.

The proposed regulations would allow non-extractive activities in the 9.18 sq mile boundary, including swimming, snorkeling, boating, and surfing. The MPA would prohibit take, damage, injury, or possession of any living, geologic, or cultural marine resource. Recreational fishing with hook and line from the shore would still be allowed.

By adding Point Sal to the state’s MPA network, Central California’s coast will benefit from increased habitat connectivity, representation, and replication – all key to increasing biodiversity in our waters.
Safeguarding this unique and relatively undisturbed area now will help bolster ocean health and promote climate resilience into the future.

To learn more about this MPA Proposal and what the Dunes Center is doing to advocate for it, join us on a community hike Saturday June 27th at 9am! Link to register is in our bio! Can’t make the hike but still want to support? Sign the public petition in our bio
