Museum of Flight and Aerial Firefighting The Museum is open around the middle of May until October 1. We try to be open 9-5, Mon-Sat, but it depends on the weather!

The Museum is behind the rest area on Hwy 20. The Museum of Flight & Aerial Firefighting was founded in 1987, incorporated in 1992, and has acquired through lease from the South Big Horn County Airport, the land north of the WYDOT rest area for the long-term site of our museum. In a partnership with the Greybull Area Chamber of Commerce, the museum operates from the facility located behind the res

t area, while applying for grants and seeking donations to enable a permanent building to be erected for indoor displays and for the purchase of, or transport costs for, other World War II and firefighting aircraft. Visitors originate from all over the world and all parts of the US to see the famous aircraft in Greybull. The Museum of Flight & Aerial Firefighting invites you to come and experience an unforgettable day of aviation history.

This is one of the Kaman H-43A’s that Hawkins & Powers owned. We would have two running at a time for spraying sagebrush. In the 60 & 70’s, we used helicopters and airplanes to spray sagebrush which killed it. This would make the grass grow more for cattle to graze on. The Kaman’s were also used for fire fighting. We had fire contracts in North Carolina each spring. We would trailer two of the Kaman’s to Kinston, North Carolina to start the contracts. My Dad, Dan Hawkins is the pilot. I’m not able to tell who the guy standing outside the aircraft.

The Greybull, Wyoming Airport around the mid 80’s. At this time all the Hawkins & Powers Aviation airplanes were stored closer to the main hangar. We did not have the Bone Yard to the North as it is today. This picture may have been taken in the spring, it seems some of the Privateers are missing, might be out on contract. Several C-119’s and KC-97’s.

On September 27, 2025 the Beartooth Composite Squadron, from Billings, MT came to visit the Museum. It is part of the Civil Air Patrol—an auxiliary branch of the U.S. Air Force. Their ages were from 12-18 and included their leaders. It was great to have the opportunity to give them a tour!! Thank you for coming to visit.

It is sad news 🥺but there will still be some airplanes in the boneyard. They are all privately owned.

Roughly 20 vintage airplanes – or at least, pieces of them -- are up for auction at South Big Horn County Airport in Greybull.

I believe this is back in the late 60’s at Avery Aviation in Greybull, Wy. It‘a probably within a year of Dan Hawkins & Gene Powers buying the company being renamed Hawkins & Powers Aviation.
The little white building was the main office. The new much bigger office was built in the mid 70’s.
