From the archive — a 1959 noir, scene by scene

Pulled for this auction: original stills from The House of the Seven Hawks (1959), a Robert Taylor murder mystery. Five 8x10 production stills with MGM and National Screen Service tags — including a tense scene of a man standing over a woman in a book-lined room, preserved on original studio paper. A second lot of stills from the same film is also in this auction.

The markings are what make a still more than paper: studio tags and stamps that tell its history, from the studio to our shelves.

Did You Know — where "lobby cards" got their name

Did you know the term "lobby card" comes from theater lobbies?

Studios shipped sets of cards — usually eight — to theaters with each film. They were displayed in the lobby to promote what was playing now and what was coming next. Most were thrown out after the run, which is why surviving sets are collectible today.

This auction includes a set of four mini lobby cards from Hurricane (1979), with Jason Robards Jr. and Mia Farrow.

What happens before a lot goes up for auction

Every lot in an MPA auction passes through four steps before it's listed:

1. Condition check — folds, tears, fading, restoration history
2. Markings analysis — studio tags, National Screen Service stamps, rerelease marks: what the paper itself tells us about its history
3. Photography — front, back, edge, any flaws
4. Cataloging in the archive

Ed handles condition and markings analysis. Sue runs photography and cataloging. Everything is recorded so collectors know exactly what they're bidding on.
