Join us on Tuesday, August 4th at Noon at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum for a program by Lewis Smith. He will be presenting on Writing Historical Fiction in the 21st Century - An Author's Journey. Lewis has a bachelor's and master's degree in history from ETA&M. He has taught history for 35 years and is currently the Dual Credit American History teacher at Sulphur Springs HS. An avid collector of fossils and Indian artifacts, Lewis published his first novel, The Testimonium, in 2014. Since then, he has released six more and has another coming out next year. His stories lean heavily into his Christian faith as well as his fascination with history and archeology. Join us for a program on Thursday, July 23rd beginning at 7pm at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum by Dr. John McManus on "June 6, 1944 D-Day and the landing of the "Big Red One" on Omaha Beach." He will also provide commentary about the military leadership of D-Day including General Eisenhower, who had overall command of the invasion, and General Patton, General Bradley and General Montgomery, the commanders of the ground forces. Dr. McManus is recognized internationally as the foremost historian of two of the most famous WWII events, the D-Day Landings as well as General MacArthur and his leadership of the US Army in the Pacific War. He is a Professor of Military History at the University of Missouri Science and Technology in Rolla, Missouri. Join us on Tuesday, July 7th at Noon at the museum for a program by Ron Robinson. His presentation will be on "The American Civil War Revisited - The Military Campaigns that Ended it." It will focus on the surrender at Appomattox as well as the events that occurred after the battle of Gettysburg and Vicksburg that resulted in the collapse and subsequent surrender of Lee's army. He will also present the data accumulated over the decades that illustrate the advantages the north had over the south in waging war.
Ron grew up 25 miles from Springfield, Illinois' home of Abraham Lincoln. He graduated from Eastern Illinois University majoring in history. His lifelong interest in the Civil War resulted in being appointed to the Board of the Lincoln Forum based in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania in 2015. Now retired from a 24 yr. career in higher education administration and 32 years in economic development, Ron's Greenville experience includes service as CEO of the Greenville Economic Development Board, a member of the Board of the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum, and currently as Chair of the the Texas WWII History Roundtable - Audie Murphy Chapter. Camp Doughboy is right around the corner at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum. This year’s theme will focus on the World War I era. All of the arts and crafts, games, songs and activities will relate to the theme. For example, some of the activities will include making a parachute and gas mask, creating a trench scene diorama, making a biplane, learning about World War I and learning some new songs. These are just some of the activities that will be taking place during the program.
The week long camp program will be for 6-10 year olds from 9:00-12:00. It will take place July 14-18th and will cost $70. To register your child please call (903) 450-4502. The museum is located at 600 Interstate Hwy 30 in Greenville, TX.

Join us on Saturday, June 20th from 10am-12pm at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum for 250th Kids Day. To help celebrate the country’s 250th anniversary we will have activity stations set up in the museum so kids can make crafts like a tricorn hat, visit learning stations and see some of the items that were used to help teach kids about colonial times and the founding of our country. A special thanks goes to Regent King’s Fort Chapter Inc., NSDAR and TISD for letting us borrow their America 250 traveling trunk program that helped us plan this day’s activities. Join us for a program on Tuesday, June 2nd at Noon at the Audie Murphy/American Cotton Museum by Dr. Ken Bridges who will be talking about the homefront and the men and women who fought overseas during WWII who were from Texas. Dr. Bridges is a professor of history, geography and political science at South Arkansas College in El Dorado as well as an online instructor with Odessa College. He was born in Arlington and raised in Grand Prairie. He received a BA from the University of Texas at Austin and a MA and PhD in history from the University of North Texas in 2003. In addition, he received a second MA in Public Administration from Southern Arkansas University in 2023. Dr. Bridges has written 8 books and writes the History Minute column that appears in 98 newspapers in Arkansas and Texas and reaches more than 200,000 readers each week. Among his books are Tales of Old Texas, a collection of his Texas History columns. Admission to the program is free for museum members; otherwise there will be a $5 general admission fee.
