The Revitalization of Downtown Greenville, SC

Greenville, SC has come a long way since the early days when we were known as the Textile Capital of the World. Through strong public and private partnerships and strategic planning the city now boasts a vibrant mix of historic buildings, major corporations, small businesses and restored public spaces.

Check out this video that was shot at the Historical Society office last fall featuring board member Don Koonce.

The Cherrydale House was moved to its new home on the Furman campus 20 years ago this month. Thanks to the generosity of the Stone family and AIG Baker, the historic home was preserved and will be enjoyed for many years to come.

One hundred years ago today soldiers from “Old Hickory”, the 30th Division, broke the Hindenburg Line near Bellicourt France. The success of penetrating the defenses of the German Empire would lead to the end of The Great War (World War 1) on November 11, 1918.
This morning proclamations were read by officials from both the city and county recognizing the sacrifices made by the men of the 30th Division who trained here in Greenville at Camp Sevier in 1917-18.
Today’s ceremony was held in McPherson Park, the site where General Leonard Wood, Army Chief of Staff, announced the creation of Camp Sevier in 1917.
