Join us on Sunday, June 7 at 3 p.m. in the Eagles School for “HISTORY SPEAKS.” Charles Ewen, Professor Emeritus of Anthropology at ECU, and Tom Shields, Professor Emeritus of English at ECU, will speak about their book, "'Becoming the Lost Colony: The History, Lore and Popular Culture of the Roanoke Mystery,” winner of the 2026 James Deetz Book Award. Since Jamestown settler John Smith set out in search of the Roanoke settlers in 1608, ideas and theories of what happened to the Roanoke colony have captured the American imagination. Join us for a discussion of these theories and the historical contexts in which different ones became popular. Refreshments and a book signing will follow. Free event. 4570 County Home Rd., Greenville. The school is air-conditioned, and there are restrooms on site.

The Satterthwaite store, built in Pactolus in the 1880s, is one of our treasured buildings. We are always seeking donations of items that might have been found in the store between the 1880s and the 1940s. In particular, we would like an old pot-bellied wood stove (does not need to be working) to replace the one that was removed, an old drink cooler to go outside the store, any interesting produce or trade signs, old tins and containers, etc. If you have something you think would fit our store, please email us at [email protected]. All donations are tax deductible. Thank you.

We learned so much from two of our new demonstrators this year at Trades and Skills of the 1800s. Tracie Hampton and Larry Houston from Joyner Library showcased traditional techniques of book binding. We learned a lot from them and look forward to having them with us again in the future!
