The grounds of this National Historic Landmark are open to the public Sunday–Saturday, dawn to dusk. The Visitor Center and Museum at Winterville Mounds are closed for future renovation and interpretation of its exhibits.

From about AD 1000 to 1450 Winterville Mounds was a gathering place and ceremonial site for Mississippian Indians. Today 12 prehistoric Native American mounds and two large plazas remain. It is a National Historic Landmark.
