Historic Hanna's Town & Westmoreland History

Historic Hanna's Town & Westmoreland History Nonprofit dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Base

Founded in 1908, the Westmoreland Historical Society is an educational organization dedicated to acquiring and managing resources related to the history of Westmoreland County and using these resources to encourage a diverse audience to make connections to the past, develop an understanding of the present, and provide direction for the future. The Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission reco

gnize the Westmoreland Historical Society as the official county historical society. In 1969, Westmoreland County, collaborating with the Westmoreland Historical Society, purchased the 180-acre property for the purpose of creating a historic site that would preserve and share the story of Hannaโ€™s Town. Since then, the Westmoreland Historical Society has initiated archaeological studies, rebuilt important structures such as Hanna's Tavern and the Fort, and developed educational programs to connect the public with an important piece of Westmoreland County history. Historic Hanna's Town consists of the reconstructed Hanna's Tavern, three re-located log houses, a reconstructed Revolutionary War era fort, and a wagon shed that houses an authentic late 18th century Conestoga wagon. In 2019, the Westmoreland Historical Society moved its headquarters to Historic Hanna's Town and opened the Westmoreland History Education Center. With an exhibit gallery, classroom, museum shop, and library, the Education Center invites visitors, educators, and research to discover local history and its connections to broader historical narratives.

๐Ÿ”ด This ornament is available to purchase in our Museum Shop at the Westmoreland History Education Center at 809 Forbes Trail Rd.

, , ,

For more about this unique ornament:
The rose pattern on the ornament originates from a late 18th century English creamware teacup during archaeological excavations along the Forbes Road in Hanna's Town. The broken cup and a teaspoon marked with C & S were found on the property of Charles & Sarah Foreman's tavern. Through discoveries like these, it becomes clear that Hanna's Town, despite being in a remote frontier area, was connected closely with the English economy. These items would have been treasured pieces of the Foreman family before the town was attacked and burned on July 13, 1782, be Seneca and their British allies.

โญ Something exciting is happening on site today! โญ

The "Orphan House," is an old log cabin (likely early 19th century) located on the edge of County Park property -- until today! It is being dismantled and moved closer to the fort that we have on site. It will be stored there until we have the funds to reassemble it. โฌ…๏ธ

Specific plans for the old house are yet to be determined, but its new location will help to serve our efforts in continuing to cultivate an 18th century village setting and further expand our site.
