Kathleen Jacobs — Tree Installation
Her linen canvas wraps gently around the tree, absorbing wind, light, and the scent of autumn leaves. When unwrapped after seasons, the surface bears the memory of the bark - marks made by time, weather, and season. In this installation, the fleeting blaze of autumn becomes form: rust, ember, and gold held in quiet balance. The work captures the moment when movement becomes memory, and color becomes time.

Thought -2020
oil on canvas
42 x 40 inches

A translucent veil seems to settle over this composition, inviting the viewer into a quiet, contemplative space. Beneath this gauzy surface, Shapiro’s expressive use of color pulses with emotion—cool strokes of blue drift across the canvas like fragments of thought, while subtle hints of red and pink emerge from beneath, suggesting vulnerability and hidden intensity. A wash of yellow at the edge introduces warmth and light, animating the scene with a sense of air movement and tension.

This work speaks in layers—both literal and emotional—offering a richly textured experience where energy, memory, and introspection coexist.

You wake in the morning thinking spring has arrived, only for snow to fall by afternoon, leaving you wondering what’s going on. Yet somehow, that final scene — snow blanketing the ground with a faint sunset glow — feels like a quiet gift, warming your heart despite the chill.

Currently on display at The Met, renowned Taiwanese calligrapher Tong Yang-Tze (董陽孜) created two monumental works for the museum. One of these features a phrase by the celebrated Song Dynasty poet and essayist Su Shi (蘇軾): “Act when appropriate, halt when necessary” (行於其所當行,止於其不得不止).
