The Slate Valley region extends for 24 miles along the New York/Vermont border - from Granville, NY and Rupert, VT north to Fair Haven, VT. Slate deposits were discovered here in the 1800s and a strong slate industry was established, with over 400 quarry sites following the slate vein. An estimated 35 slate quarries continue to this day, providing all of the colored roofing slate produced in the U

nited States, including Vermont gray, variegated purple, unfading green, Vermont black, unfading red and other variations. The Slate Valley Museum offers an exciting range of programs, exhibitions, and special events that share its mission to collect, catalog, conserve, exhibit, and interpret materials, artifacts, machines, and information that demonstrate the geology of slate and the history of slate quarrying and the quarrying community in the Slate Valley of New York and Vermont. Customized programs can be arranged for school groups and motorcoach tours.

TODAY IN HISTORY:
Artist Martha Levy, painter of this mural, “Men Working in Slate Quarry,” passed away on February 26, 1949 at 9:15 pm, of what is stated as natural causes, at University Hospital, NYC.

She was 47 years old.

Our volunteer researcher, Bob Isherwood, has been working for years to piece together the breadcrumbs of Martha’s illusive life story, including where she ultimately ended up. We look forward to sharing more about her life and work in future offerings at the museum.
