The Grand Marais Historical Society is an all-volunteer organization dedicating to preserving the history of the Grand Marais area. We operate three museums, a rose garden, a historic iris display garden, and a 25-stop walking tour around town. Our museums are open in the summer and admission is by donation.

It's Iris Time! For planting, that is. We weren't able to offer irises inside the Old Post Office Museum this year, due to ongoing renovation work, but if anyone would like to plant a bed of irises from Grand Marais, we can box up a nice mix of 20+ irises and mail them to you for $50, shipping included. All proceeds will go to the museums. Interested? Email us at [email protected]. We can take PayPal or Venmo payments.

We've just about finished the first coat of paint on the new siding for the Old Post Office Museum. We're using Sherwin-Williams' premier Duration exterior paint in a nice light tan, which will look great with our white trim and red doors. Hats off to our volunteer painting crew, made up of HS members helping to get this project across the finish line! Our thanks to Township of Burt, Alger County for allowing us to use the barn at the Community Center. Keegan Redloske and his crew from KCR Homes LLC will be finishing the project in a few weeks. It's going to look beautiful!

To celebrate the 100 year anniversary of the Pickle Barrel, a donation was presented to the Pickle Barrel restoration, in memory of Ed and Florence (Honey) Ogden. Pictured is great-great nephew John Ogden and great-great niece Patti Ogden Lico (great-great niece Maria Ogden Christy not present), descendants of William Donahey, cartoonist of the Teenie Weenies, who lived in the pickle barrel. The Ogdens encourage folks to donate to keep this wonderful attraction available for future generations to enjoy. Volunteer Teresa Mitchell was at the Pickle Barrel that day and accepted the donation with thanks from the Historical Society.

And after six weeks of hard work by Troy Morgan, the Pickle Barrel has a beautifully-renovated exterior! It is now coated in a waterproof membrane from Semco. We still have some tasks to complete, but it sure is looking nice! We are trying to have it open for visitors on weekends, and during the week when possible.

Stop by the Pickle Barrel garden and see our new exhibit honoring the tough, resilient people who refused to let Grand Marais die. The graduates of Burt Township School represent many of these families and we have senior class photos on display all the way back to 1937. If you were a graduate, a teacher, or a staff member, please share your memories with us! In our welcome box, you'll find information postcards, a guest book, and even some forms to fill out with a memory or two. You can drop it right in the box under our welcome station. We will compile these memories into bound volumes. Help us keep our history alive!
