The Mt. Hood Cultural Center and Museum is hosting its September Social History Happy Hour, featuring screenings of two documentary films: "Oregon Rock: The Pioneers" and "Jeff Thomas: Oregon's Climbing Historian."

Join us for an evening featuring legendary climbing pioneer Jeff Thomas and director Ned Thanhouser. Together, they will share stories and historical context on the development of rock climbing in Oregon and the Pacific Northwest and present short films of daring ascents.

From pushing boundaries with 5.11 routes at Smith Rock in the 1970s to logging over 69 first ascents and authoring influential guidebooks, Jeff Thomas helped shape the region's climbing scene into what it is today.

Clackamas County Sheriff’s Office has lifted the Level 1 Evacuation for the Mount Hood corridor, from Rhododendron east through Government Camp and surrounding areas of Mount Hood National Forest. Timberline thanks the frontline firefighters, incident teams, support personnel, coordinators, and community organizations working tirelessly. Our hearts are with communities across the Pacific Northwest affected by this wildfire season. While conditions improve, we encourage everyone to remain vigilant, follow local guidance, and continue to prioritize safety.

This Saturday, come up and check out the Cascadia Center for Arts & Crafts Blacksmith Week demos at the shop across the highway and then join us for a fun Social History Happy Hour all about the Skiway Tram at the Musuem. Doors open at 6:30pm.

Join us for our August Social History Happy Hour as we dive into one of Oregon’s wildest (and shortest-lived) engineering experiments: Mt. Hood’s Flying Bus!

From 1951-1956, the Mt. Hood Aerial Skiway attempted to connect Government Camp to Timberline Lodge using an actual suspended bus. It was bold, it was unusual, and... it was deeply flawed.

Guest speaker Peter Dibble, a local history enthusiast whose YouTube channel explores lesser-known Oregon stories, will share his documentary video telling the quirky story behind this bizarre piece of Mt. Hood history.

Based on current dry conditions and forecasted high temperatures, effective today, August 12, Clackamas Fire in conjunction with Oregon Department of Forestry will move into EXTREME Fire Danger. This will remain in effect until further notice.

The following restrictions apply to properties within ODF-protected areas:

•No debris burning
•No campfires
•No smoking while traveling on forestlands
•No power saw use
•No off road-driving
•No cutting, grinding, welding
•No mowing/cutting of dried, cured grass
•Any other spark-emitting internal combustion engine

While Clackamas Fire does not impose these restrictions throughout our entire coverage area, backyard/debris burning is currently prohibited. We also strongly discourage recreational fires and other spark- or flame-producing activities, during periods of elevated fire danger. Parts of Clackamas Fire’s coverage area fall within ODF boundaries, so be sure to check your address and any applicable restrictions before having a recreational fire or participating in these activities.

Yesterday's Steiner Cabins Tour, hosted by the Steiner Society and the Government Camp Cultural Center & Museum, was a big success and a lot of fun, all on a sunny summer day! The 1937 Steiner Log Church was officially the last stop on the tour, but we were busy with visitors all day, with somewhere between 250 to 300 folks stopping by, all asking great questions and engaging in even better conversations. It was also fun to catch up with friends who stepped through the door. Thank you for visiting us, and a huge thank you to all of the volunteers who helped at the church, as well as the entire Steiner Cabins tour.

In the photo below, Mike Gudge (center) visits with guests while answering their questions about Henry Steiner, John Steiner, moving the church, the vision for the future, and even the wooden kayak hanging above!

Thanks to our generous community, four shipments of water, diapers, food, and other critical supplies have already been delivered to Warm Springs.

Despite these efforts, the reservation continues to face a severe water shortage and remains under a boil water notice. Clean drinking water and personal hygiene supplies are still in high demand. (Note: Gallon jugs are preferred, as they are often more useful than individual bottles)

We are accepting donations daily from 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM.

Thousands in the Warm Springs reservation have been without power or clean water for nearly a week. As the government reopens they’re faced with rebuilding — even while the fire still burns.
