**Today’s date in 1862**

On July 19 General Jackson reached Gordonsville and took up quarters at the home of Mrs. Mary Barber, the old Gordon Tavern at the north end of Main Street. From there he wrote to his wife: “I have been staying for a few days with Miss Barber, mother-in-law of the Rev Mr. Ewing, of our church, and have received the much kindness from her and her three daughters.” The Reverend Daniel B. Ewing was the minister of Presbyterian Church located halfway down Main Street towards the Virginia Central bridge. There Jackson attendant worship on several occasions.
