This week’s trade to commemorate America 250 and the 25 trades that made America is the tailor. Tailors were vital to Colonial America because most clothing was custom-made for the wearer. The tailor hand-stitched custom clothing for all levels of society, from wealthy merchants and planters, soldiers and tradesmen, to indentured servants and slaves. A typical tailor’s shop would have consisted of a team of at least three individuals with specialized skills: Table monkeys (yes, they were actually called that!) did the heavy sewing, cutters shaped the patterns, and finishers did the delicate work and finer details.

Meet the man who started it all, Kasper Mansker. Begin with the new museum, Goodlettsville: A Small Town View, and take a tour of Mansker's Station to dive deeper.

The overarching theme of this exhibit is Goodlettsville through the years, beginning in 1779 with the settlement of Kasper Mansker in what would become Goodlettsville, TN. The next trade to celebrate America 250 and the 25 trades that made America is the printer. Printing was the primary source of mass media in Colonial America. Printers produced newspapers, books, almanacs, legal forms, and government documents. Printing was originally highly regulated because it was considered dangerous to the governing establishment. This turned out to be true because as printing became less regulated in the 13 colonies, the more anti-British sentiment began to be propagated throughout them. Paul Revere was well-known for contributing political cartoons to newspapers like The Boston-Gazette and The Massachusetts Spy. One of the most famous American printers was Benjamin Franklin, who owned and operated The Pennsylvania Gazette.

Yet another vital trade in building America was the occupation of a cooper. A cooper was a skilled craftsman who built and repaired wooden waterproof vessels or containers such as casks, barrels, tubs, butter churns, and buckets. Normally, these vessels would be fashioned from wooden staves that had to be steamed and shaped to precise dimensions. Many of these containers were used to store and ship important goods like flour, water, to***co, wh***ey, b**r, and gunpowder. It took seven years for an apprentice to learn how to be a professional cooper.

What do you use to complete your homework? A pencil? A pen? A marker?

On the frontier, children in the schoolhouse would learn to write with the quill pen. Today, students on field trips travel back in time to the schoolhouse and practice writing with a quill pen at Mansker's Station!
