In 1975, the Goodlettsville American Revolution Bicentennial Commission chose as their project the restoration of the Bowen House. The last tenants left the home in 1960, and afterwards the home was used as a barn. By 1975, the home was in depleting condition.
Funding to restore the house was secured through federal and state grants, along with private donations. The Winn Brothers Engineering Company of Nashville was contracted to stabilize the structure. Their plan of stabilization included lifting the house from its foundation by using hydraulic jacks. Other problems that had to be addressed were the numerous cracks that spanned the brick walls, and that the inside of the home was beyond recognition.
In 1980, after several years of work, the house was added to the National Register of Historic Places. That same year the Bowen House was opened for tours.
