The King House Association

The King House Association The King House Association is a nonprofit association preserving and protecting the last unoccupied Odawa home on Lamkin Road in Good Hart, Michigan.

HISTORY Thanks to a group of interested community members, the last standing, unoccupied, original Odawa home on Lamkin Road is being preserved. Built in 1849 by the King family, the home is located in what was originally the center of Middle Village, a vibrant Odawa fishing community during the 1700-1800’s. Beginning in December 2014, the group successfully established The King House Association as a 501c3 nonprofit organization and contracted to purchase the home from the King family. The association plans to restore and preserve the building and grounds and eventually develop displays for visitors and residents alike wishing to learn more about the people and history of Middle Village/Good Hart. MISSION The mission of The King House Association is to purchase, restore, and maintain the 1849 King home in Middle Village/Good Hart in tribute to the rich cultural history of this beautiful locale. OBJECTIVES The association’s first priority is raising $40,000 for the purchase (an 18-month land contract is in place to complete the transaction). Over $30K had been raised as of August 2015. The association then has a three year operational budget goal of $60,000 for the home’s roof, windows, doors, floors, logs and chinking restoration. The goal of the Board is to reach the $100,000 mark by summer 2016. BOARD Carolyn Sutherland Carolyn Sutherland relocated to Good Hart in 1971 from Huntington Woods, Michigan to operate the Good Hart General Store. She has a long passion for community involvement being an instrumental facilitator in community projects such as the development of the R.F.C Fire Rescue, the Greater Good Hart Association property owners association, the St. Ignatius Beach committee, and was the driving force in development of The King House Association. Carolyn has been a realtor with Graham Real Estate since 1971. Susan Hannah Susan Hannah has been a summer visitor to Good Hart for more than 50 years, moving here permanently in 2013. Her husband's family has owned property along Lamkin Road since 1938 when her father in law began bringing his family to the area while president of Michigan State University. Susan spent her professional life in higher education as a professor and administrator at various institutions in the Midwest. Jane Cardinal Jane Cardinal has been a resident of Good Hart her entire life. Jane was integral in the publishing of "The Place Where the Crooked Tree Stood” as well as “Tastes and Tales Along the Tunnel of Trees, writing and researching for the books, also providing all illustrations. Jane's career spans 38 years as designer and manager of artists, photographers, sculptors and graphic designers in the gift, toy, hobby and video game business in L.A.,San Francisco and Chicago. Susan Sparrow Carson Susan is a lifelong area resorter and has owned a home in Good Hart for nearly 15 years. A graduate of Duke University, Susan has been an avid volunteer on area projects as well as an abundance of charity work outside of the area. Her professional role as bookkeeper offers a welcomed addition to The King House Association Board handling the organization’s donations and finances. Jim Clarke Biography coming soon. Special thank you to Grace and Jim Adrianse of Ada, Michigan who recently donated this beautiful pot bellied stove to The King House Association, a piece similar to the stoves used in Middle Village in the late 1800's. We're eternally grateful for these gracious donations, assisting us in continuing our mission.

We're thrilled to share with you our installation of new windows on The King House. Another milestone met with the help of all of you. Thank you!

*** Also please see two current needs below and share this post if you'd be so kind. ***

The King House Association is currently seeking:

1. Pick up of and winter storage for 3 pine timbers (17'; 10'; and 8'). Timbers will need to be delivered back next spring/summer.

2. Pick up and winter storage for 10 yellow birch timbers of various lengths left over from the restoration. These are also really heavy! but would be great for reclaimed wood projects of various kinds. 150-year old yellow birch is quite special and we're looking to preserve this fantastic donation for later use.

Mathilda (King) Allison hired local builder Bill Glass to do the first renovation of the King House in the 1980's. We weren't sure until now of the exact date(s) of that work. Lucky for us, members of Bill's team, Willie Walsh and Mickey Godzik signed one of the boards. Visit the comments for more on their work.

Thanks to our many donors –foundations, individuals, and organizations who gave money, materials and services – the repair and restoration of the King House is substantively complete. Please drop by for a visit and admire the craftsmanship! We plan to open the House by late May for visitors. With the restoration behind us, the Board is focusing on developing a pictorial timeline of maps, drawings, photographs, and artifacts that tell the story of Middle Village/Good Hart from prehistory to the present. The display would be installed in chronological order around the interior of the House, ideally by Fall 2020. The time periods we are thinking about are Prehistory (first inhabitants to European contact in the late 16th century); the Golden Age of the Fur Trade (from the coming of the Odawa in the mid-17th century until the early 19th; Permanent settlement (Waganiski plat in1850 through the homesteaders (late19th century); and Resorts to Residences (late 19th century to the present). These periods may change as we learn more, but the sweep of the story from the earliest inhabitants of the area to the present is the goal. We will be asking folks questions about what to include, how all the material should be organized and presented, and if they could contribute photographs or other items we could duplicate to include in the display. We are also putting together several grant applications to cover the costs of design, collection, and installation. Some of the materials we plan to incorporate in the Timeline are part of the photo gallery here on FaceBook or on the KHA website at www.kinghouseassociation.org. Stay tuned and we will keep you posted on our progress. SB Hannah, Vice-Chair and Secretary of the KHA Board of Directors
