🎄 Sign Up for Our Fifth Annual Glenfestival of Trees! 🎄

Help us fill the Heritage Museum with holiday spirit! We invite individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to decorate a tree or wreath for our fifth annual Glenfestival of Trees.

This is a wonderful way to share your creativity and connect with the community! Throughout December, visitors can tour the museum, enjoy the festive displays, and vote for their favorites. We’ll tally the votes at the end of the month and award cash prizes for Favorite Tree and Favorite Wreath!

✨ The trees and wreaths will be on display throughout December, with special evening hours every Saturday so everyone has a chance to enjoy the displays.

You can also see the displays during our Heritage Winter Market on Saturday, November 28th!

Community Cookbook: Yon Marzetti/Yon Monzetti

A Midwestern comfort-food classic! Yon Marzetti, also known as Johnny Marzetti, is a hearty pasta casserole that became popular throughout the Midwest in the 20th century. It's often associated with a restaurant in Columbus, Ohio, where local legend says it was created as an affordable, filling meal for college students.

This recipe was submitted by Deborah (Deb) Larsen, an Edwardsville resident who became part of the Glen Carbon Senior Center group and shared her recipe for the Senior Group cookbook.

Over the years, Yon Marzetti has become a familiar dish at family dinners, school cafeterias, and church potlucks. Recipes like Deb's are a reminder of the people who contributed to our community cookbooks and the everyday meals that bring people together.

Community Cookbook Series

This recipe for Sand Tarts was shared with Evelyn Wiechman by her aunt, Rose Mary Rudde. Rose Mary worked as a schoolteacher before moving to St. Louis, where she drafted charts for the federal government. She passed away in 1995, around the same time Evelyn contributed this recipe to the Glen Carbon Seniors Group Cookbook.

Evelyn herself was deeply involved in Glen Carbon. In 1975, she became the first woman to serve as a Village Trustee, a position she held until 1989. She was also active with the Heritage Museum, Yanda Cabin, Historic Preservation Commission, Glen Carbon Seniors, and many other local organizations.

So this recipe carries a little family history with it—a recipe passed from Rose Mary to Evelyn and eventually preserved in a Glen Carbon community cookbook.

Community Cookbook!

Rose Modene was born in Glen Carbon in 1926 to Frank and Rose (Chaloupka) Sasek and grew up on Glen Crossing Road. Her roots in the community ran deep. She was a member of St. Cecilia’s Catholic Church and an active member of the Ladies Rosary Group, where faith, friendship, and fellowship brought neighbors together.

In 1995, Rose shared a recipe for Rhonda’s Poppy Seed Chicken Casserole in the St. Cecilia Parish Family Cookbook. Rose passed away in 2011. Her (or Rhonda's) recipe is one of the many small pieces of local history preserved in these community cookbooks.
