The pigs (and humans) had a great time celebrating Iggy's, Ducky's, Archie's, and Otis' 1st birthday!

Henrico County’s “Meadow Farm” held a special event on Tuesday, Nov. 26, to celebrate four piglets’ first birthdays.

All the animal care staff assisted in bottle feeding the piglets. Records were kept of how much each piglet consumed along with their weight. Staff member Jenn's experience with wildlife rehabilitation played a crucial role in creating a successful care plan! You could always tell when it was feeding time based on how loud it was!

When the piglets were first born, staff member Jenn discovered a much smaller male who was clearly the runt of the litter. He was found far from his siblings and very cold.

This piglet required a bit more individualized care than his siblings, which included a separate heated enclosure and more frequent feedings. Despite being weaker and smaller than the others, he developed a strong personality and began to thrive. He regularly went home with staff so he could receive his additional feedings that were every 4-6 hours!

Staff provided him with social interactions and stimulation to ensure he would be prepared for his evental reintroduction to his siblings once strong enough!

Fun fact: He now weighs over 200lbs!

Day 2 of sharing photos of our piglets' journey as their 1st birthday approaches on Nov. 26th!

It was quickly realized that Gertie was not producing milk, and staff would have to intervene if the piglets were going to survive. Animal care staff brought them inside to warm up, create an ID for each one, record their weights, and begin feeding! For the first 24 hours, staff fed and weighed the piglets every two hours! It was a long (and loud) first night teaching them how to use a bottle!

With wet, cold weather on the way, some animals may choose to spend more time in their shelters. Each shelter is filled with dry straw or wood chips, and will soon have wind blocks installed in the windows for the winter months.

Park, historic farm, fishing spot, and playground all in one, this is the historic home of the Sheppard family.

Meadow Farm Museum, an 1860 living history farm site and museum, presents programs and exhibits on the culture of the rural South. Our history interpreters provide insight into the lives of Dr. John Mosby Sheppard, owner of Meadow Farm, and his family. On selected weekends, we demonstrate seasonal activities in the farmhouse, barn, doctor’s office, kitchen, fields, and pastures.

Crump Park features playgrounds, picnic shelters, trails, large open fields, and a fishing pond. RF&P Park can be accessed through the back of the park.
