The Pacific Northwest in August on a perfect blue-sky day is just stunning.

Walking five miles through the trees with a friend, surrounded by all that green, fresh air, and sunshine, is one of my favorite ways to spend a summer day. Sometimes the simplest days really are the best.

Ten paintings. Ten beginnings. And absolutely no idea yet where they’ll end up.

I’m starting a new group of works for my Ticket Around the World series, and right now I’m in my favorite—and sometimes most frustrating—stage: playing, layering, experimenting, and trying not to decide too soon.

Each painting is already heading in a slightly different direction. There are little moments in every one that I love, and plenty that still need help. But that’s the process. I keep adding, taking away, covering things up, and uncovering others until eventually, somehow, each one tells me it’s done.

For now, they’re beautifully unfinished.
