Not long after the battle ended, tourism began to grow in Gettysburg. Lafferty & Smith of Camptown, Pennsylvania, created the "Battle of Gettysburg Parlor Game." This set was produced around 1890.

Happy birthday, President Dwight D. Eisenhower! This commemorative plate featured in our Eisenhower Collection was part of a set produced to mark his first birthday as president.

The Republican Finance Committee of Pennsylvania organized a birthday party in Hershey on October 13, 1953, which doubled as a party fundraiser. The grand celebration was attended by more than 12,000 people and featured the president cutting a birthday cake that was nine feet wide and six feet high.

If you're heading to the National Apple Harvest Festival this weekend, save time for a visit to Beyond the Battle Museum to learn about the history of the Adams County apple industry!

Fruit growing has long been a core part of the Adams County economy, and many local orchards are still growing strong today.

You can see a colorized version of this 1920s photo of Robert Garretson's orchard and other apple industry artifacts at the museum.

On this day in 1833, Mary Jemison died after a remarkable life spanning nine decades.

Mary's family farm west of Gettysburg was attacked by French soldiers and their Native American allies when she was just 12 years old. Eight people were killed, and Mary was taken captive. She was brought into a Seneca family and assimilated to their culture.

Despite several opportunities to escape, Mary chose to stay with her new family and went on to marry two Native American men, bearing several children.

She was known as the "White Woman of the Genesee."

This statue stands near the site of her 1758 kidnapping in Buchanan Valley.

September's Artifact of the Month display features letters to local doctor J.W.C. O'Neal, who helped families recover the remains of Confederate soldiers after the Battle of Gettysburg.

A collection of more than 40 letters was recently donated to the museum, revealing far more than previously known about how the Confederate dead were located, exhumed, and returned home from Gettysburg.

You'll find the display in the concourse off the main lobby.

Today, September 11th, first responders (including firefighters, medical, police, nurses, and doctors), active duty military, and veterans receive free admission at Beyond the Battle Museum and the Shriver House Museum at Gettysburg from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
