Today, INTERN INSIGHTS visits Jenna Rhoads ’28 (History & German Studies, Public History). Jenna is a History and German Studies double major with a minor in Public History, who interned this summer at Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center. She shares, “Over the summer I shadowed nearly every aspect of working in a museum including program and event preparation, artifact collection and exhibition and visitor's services, in addition to creating my own educational programs. My primary projects this summer have been researching and filming two short videos as part of the SRMEC's "On the Ridge" and "Beyond the Ridge" series on YouTube. Additionally, I spent the summer working on researching Jewish soldiers in the Confederacy to present as part of the museum Fridays on the Ridge programing.

I also deeply valued learning about the non-profit aspects of the museum, such as funding strategies and interacting with a board of directors. This internship allowed me apply the topics and theories I learned in my Public History class with Professor Titus while also observing the highs and lows of a museum in action. The biggest highlight of this experience has been working within the community. As an intern, I represented the SRMEC at events over Juneteenth weekend and the battle anniversary where I was able to create meaningful connections with the public. I also valued the opportunities to build relationships with other non-profits and organizations in Gettysburg, museum's volunteers and attendees and the staff at the Seminary Ridge Museum and Education Center.”

On Saturday, we were privileged to sponsor and participate in “Battle-Tempered: The Physical and Psychological Consequences of War” in Frederick, Maryland.

This all-day conference, organized by historian and psychiatrist Stephen A. Goldman, opened with a lecture by Dr. Goldman, followed by a Monocacy National Battlefield caravan tour by Ranger Matt Borders, and a tour of the National Museum of Civil War Medicine. In the afternoon, at C. Burr Artz Public Library (Frederick County Public Libraries), participants experienced presentations by Codie Eash (our own Director of Education and Interpretation) and Madeleine Thompson of the Clara Barton Missing Soldiers Office. The event ended with a meaningful panel discussion among five retired combat veterans: Col. Rita M. Holton, Capt. James B. Hubbard Jr., Col. Sandra R. Mason, Lt. Col. Dan Moore, and Col. Laura Jane Stephens.
