How much has changed in more than 160 years? During National Park Week, take a look back at Gettysburg’s past and present.

Long after the Battle of Gettysburg ended, veterans returned to these fields to remember, reconnect and reflect on the experiences that changed their lives.

From the historic 1913 reunion, when more than 50,000 Civil War veterans gathered for the battle’s 50th anniversary, to the 1938 dedication of the Eternal Light Peace Memorial, these reunions helped transform Gettysburg into a place of remembrance and reconciliation.

Today, the monuments, memorials and landscapes of Gettysburg continue to preserve their stories for generations to come.

C is correct! Gettysburg National Military Park was officially transferred to the National Park Service in 1933. Prior to this, the battlefield was managed by the U.S. War Department, which had overseen the park since its establishment in 1895.
