161 years ago today on June 19, 1865, enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were finally informed of their freedom over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. On this day, Union General Gordon Granger announced General Order No. 3, enforcing the emancipation of enslaved people in the region. Today, this is recognized as Juneteenth.

The America250PA Adams County Youth Committee postcard contest has begun! A table will be set up at Children of Gettysburg 1863 where students can complete their entry on June 23. Designing starts at Noon and will continue through PJ Storytime!

The winning postcards will be printed and available to collect around Gettysburg this fall.

We have some exciting, family-friendly events coming up at Children of Gettysburg 1863 over the next couple of weeks!

📚 Join us and our partners at Adams County Library System in the side yard for Pajama Storytime around the campfire on Tuesday, June 23 from 6:30-7pm with children's librarian, Miss Robyn.

🪡 Our Historic Fiber Arts Crafts will be held on June 23, 25, and 30 from 10am to noon and 1pm to 5pm each day. Join local historian group, Danza Antiqua, for a series of historical art activities enjoyed by children and adults during the Civil War, including beadwork, embroidery, and knitting. Museum tickets are required to participate in this activity.

💥 Finally, we have living history in the side yard on June 27 and 28! Step into the past as you interact with the 11th Corps Field Hospital and their interactive stations, "Smells of the Hospital" and a "touch table." The living historians will also be demonstrating surgery on the top of the hour between 11 am and 3 pm.

FALSE is correct! Amos Humiston was a soldier in the 154th New York Volunteers who was killed on July 1, 1863 during the first day of the Battle of Gettysburg. A local resident found his body and discovered a photo of three children. The photo was published by the press and reached Amos’ wife in New York who was able to identify her husband.
