What makes a great combat leader?
Major Dick Winters Easy Company 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment 101st Airborne is considered by many historians a great combat leader. His story was portrayed in the book and series "Band of Brothers". What was the key to his success in battle? There are many answers to that question. One factor illustrated here is this book that is on exhibit at The Gettysburg Museum of History. Major Winters learned to study hard during his time at Franklin and Marshal college. He had to work his way through school. He had a very good work ethic instilled in him from his youth. When he became an officer during WWII he continued to study not only his issued field manuals but he also studied this private purchase book about Infantry tactics. Throughout this book are underlined passages that Winters wanted to emphasize. The 3rd to the last photo shows Winters on leave and what is in his hand? Books! Many factors made Winters a great leader and education and hard work is some of them. A very interesting artifact from The Major Dick Winters Collection at The Gettysburg Museum Of History.
