On October 8, 1862, the Battle of Perryville was fought in Kentucky during the Civil War.
Known as the Battle of Chaplin Hills, it was the largest battle fought in Kentucky, with more than 7,600 estimated casualties. But the battle was shaped by something as basic as water. A severe drought had left streams and creeks nearly dry, and both armies were desperately searching for water. Fighting even began around small pools of water before the battle escalated into a larger engagement.
The fighting played an important role in the Confederate campaign to gain control of Kentucky.
