Walter Johnson, known as "Big Train" because his fast ball was as fast and straight as a train, was a pitcher for the Washington Senators from 1907 to 1927. He was one of the first five players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. In 1935 he purchased a 550 acre dairy farm in Germantown where Seneca Valley High School is today where there is a street named for him nearby. In 2000 his image was on a postage stamp.

There was gold in that Black Hill!
Black Hill Regional Park was named for the Black Hills of South Dakota because back in the 1870s there was a gold mine there. Not much gold was found then, and no one can find any now, but other gold mines in other parts of Montgomery County did produce for a while. The Madeline Waters House was once the most beautiful House in Germantown -- the mansion on the hill that most every small town had -- designed by an architect and built by the wealthy store owner Llyod Dorsey and occupied until her death by his spinster half-sister Madelaine Waters. The site is occupied today by the National Tire and Battery building, but the house had been designated historic before it was destroyed by arson on April 1, 1986, so the property owner had to contribute to the community with a historic marker and a park. The marker was stolen in 2011 and never replaced. The sidewalk park is never used and is neglected.

The Cider Barrel on Rt. 355 in Germantown is a trademark of Germantown -- hand-crafted and unique, it cannot be found anywhere else. It is recognized on the National Register of Historic Places as an example of "roadside novelty architecture. As such, repairs to the structure must be made "in-kind," meaning with the same materials as the original. Vandalism to the structure carries a high fine.

05/18/2021

During the month of May, the Germantown Historical Society would like to take this moment to recognize Asian-American and Pacific Islander History Month. AAPI Germantowners are valued members of our community and have been leaders across a variety of fields for generations, creating art, starting businesses, and representing our community in the state legislature.

We believe that it is essential now, in light of the violence towards Asian Americans in Atlanta, GA, as well as other communities affected by gun violence across the country, to highlight how much we value and appreciate AAPI Germantowners as members of our community. We encourage you to check out the Smithsonian Institution’s resources on AAPI history. We also pledge to continue examining and sharing the history of every member of our community because our history is so essential to who we are as people and as a community.

https://smithsonianapa.org/stand/

The Smithsonian Institution mourns the loss of eight people—seven of them women, six of whom were of Asian descent—who were killed last week when a gunman opened fire inside three spas located in Georgia.

Although we come to an end for Women’s History Month, the Germantown Historical Society would like to acknowledge and elevate the many contributions that women have made to our community’s culture, identity, and history. Since the earliest days of our founding, women have played an integral role in all aspects of our community from the economy, to sports and culture, to education and faith, to politics, and so on. The Germantown Historical Society remains as committed as ever to lift up their voices and sharing their many accomplishments.

Women helped to build the first farms and mills in Germantown, taught in the first schools, helped to operate the first stores, and funded some of the first churches. Women led the way on integration of schools and churches in Germantown. In the 21st century, women constitute approximately half of the elected leaders representing Germantown. Germantown’s first and only professional sports team is the Washington Spirit, which competes in the National Women’s Soccer League and sends several players to the Women’s World Cup every four years, which the United States has won more frequently than any other nation in part because of our women. Olympic swimmers in the women’s events have competed and even set records in Germantown’s indoor pool. We would be remiss if we neglected to mention that women founded and lead this very organization, dedicated to preserving and educating us about our history. We hope that in this new month, and as the Germantown Historical Society continues to examine and share our past, you are able to appreciate the many ways that women have contributed to our history and our communities.

Great morning at the Communty Flea Market in Germantown sponsored by the Germantown Historical Society, Maryland talking to voters about issues that matter to them. Ran into my buddy Andrew Saundry for MCDCC doing his GHS duties! It’s a beautiful day in District 2!
I’ve enjoyed these last few spring weekends traveling around District 2 and talking with folks about the future of the Upcounty.
