Our museum exhibits focus on the archaeology of Native American and Westward Expansion sites (Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail), the lives of pioneering settlers, the establishment of irrigation systems, the development of rural communities, the diversity of culture in the High Plains, and the innovative technologies and cultural practices of raising animals and crops – including cattle, sheep, potatoes, sugarbeets, beans, and wheat – in a semiarid environment.

The caboose that was originally at the North Platte Valley Museum is now at the Legacy of the Plains. A big thank you to R&C Welding and Fabrication for moving the caboose. Another big thank you to the City of Gering for their patiences as we got the ground ready for the move. The Railroad exhibit is one of our final projects for our Phase Two of the Capital Campaign. We hope to have a couple more cars and the dinky engine set up in the next couple of months!

We love see connections with other areas. Check out this connection. Did anyone have an International Harvester this big? Both ships were used to ship iron ore, limestone, and coal primarily to the Wisconsin Steel Co. mill in south Chicago (Wisconsin Steel was a subsidiary of International Harvester and the steel mill was built in 1901). The Harvester was built in 1911 and was owned by IH until 1964, and sailed until she was scrapped in 1977. The International was built in 1923 and originally sailed as the William H. Warner, before being sold to IH in 1933 and renamed The International in 1934. She sailed for IH until 1977, and continued to sail until being scrapped in 1988.

We are excited to have Frank Sharp presenting Thursday Aug. 6th on the history of the Texas Longhorn cattle. He is the lead educator for the Official State of Texas Longhorn Herd and is a member of the Texas Longhorn Conservancy. He has also raised longhorns for over 30 years. We are excited to have Frank present for us. His presentation will start at 6:00 pm and is free to the public.
