Legacy of the Plains

Legacy of the Plains An expanding history museum preserving the history of the North Platte Valley of Nebraska.

Our museum exhibits focus on the archaeology of Native American and Westward Expansion sites (Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail), the lives of pioneering settlers, the establishment of irrigation systems, the development of rural communities, the diversity of culture in the High Plains, and the innovative technologies and cultural practices of raising animals and crops – including cattle, sheep, potatoes, sugarbeets, beans, and wheat – in a semiarid environment.

It's National Travel and Tourism Week! Tourism is not just in metro areas and cities.
In 2025, Nebraska's 90 rural counties (counties outside Douglas, Lancaster, and Sarpy) generated nearly $12 million in lodging tax alone.

But the impact goes beyond overnight stays. Every visitor who books a room, stops in for lunch, pays admission to an attraction, picks up a souvenir in a retail store or fills up with gas impacts our community’s economy.

Rural Nebraska generates an estimated $1.2 billion or more in direct visitor spending annually, producing up to $1.8 billion in total local economic activity. In Northwest Nebraska, tourism translates to an economic impact of an estimated $25 million/year and supports more than 200 jobs.

That’s the mark tourism leaves.
