Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society

Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society Local Historical Museum
Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society was established in 1977 by a group of community members dedicated to preserving historical materials of the area for the future community members to know their roots. In May 1977 the Milwaukee Road Depot was moved to 622 W. Park Ave. and a caboose from Illinois Central Railroad was moved on site in 1985. Along with the Water Works building and the above mentioned structures, the museum has accessed genealogy information, artifacts from early Genoa/Kingston and surrounding area. The museum is a non-for profit 501 (c3) organization.

News article from Sycamore True Republican July 30, 1919:
"Genoa School Site Selected"
"Much interest was taken in the election to decide the location of the new township high school building at Genoa. It was proposed to locate it on the Brown property, a suitable tract in the east part of the city on the main street, also on the B. C. Awe land south of town, near the cemetery, but objectors to both tracts offered Oak Park, entirely covered with fine timber, in the west part of town, which was chosen by the following vote, a majority of all votes cast being necessary or a choice: Brown plat, 50; Awe plat,43; Oak Park, 112. At the same time it was voted 173 to 23 to build a school house."

It is not quite the "Deep Dig" of Boston, however it has great mystery and very important meaning to many. KVHS has begun the venture of discovery into the troubled restroom mystery. Digging began this week to reveal past years of obsolete plumbing, notice old cistern in picture, and newer plumbing that no longer is unique pathways for waste transportation. Hopefully all problems are fixed and now the upgrade of the bathroom to a handicap accessible is on the financial agenda.

KVHS recently acquired a postcard of North Washington Street indicating Lutheran Parsonage and School with the rails for the Sycamore to Woodstock Traction Company's railroad tracks going down the street. The Milwaukee Railroad crossed Washington Street in 1875 and when the traction company wanted to go over the tracks in 1912 the Milwaukee road would not allow that to happen. The traction company ended up going down Main Street to the east side of Genoa and cutting across the farm field across from the Dollar General store where they build a cement trestle to cross the Milwaukee tracks.

Support Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society in #GiveDeKalbCounty!

May 2 is Give DeKalb County day which allows donations to Genoa Museum (Kishwaukee Valley Heritage Society) to be increased with funds already committed by corporations for the support of non-profits in DeKalb County. The more donations KVHS acquires in the 24 hours on May 2 determines the percentage of dollars that the museum can receive from the corporate donations. Donations can be given in two ways. One is by on-line donations (https://www.givedekalbcounty.org/organizations/kishwaukee-valley-heritage-society) and secondly by stopping at the DeKalb County Community Foundation 475 DeKalb Avenue Sycamore, IL 60178 (old railroad freight building).
