Ten Chimneys Foundation

Ten Chimneys Foundation (Nonprofit Organization) Ten Chimneys is a landmark unique among our national treasures. And the magic is undiminished.

Ten Chimneys, the National Historic Landmark estate created by theatre legends Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne, is open to the public as a world-class house museum and national resource for theatre, arts, and arts education. Ten Chimneys’ diverse collections and enchanting décor are comprised of the original pieces hand-picked by the Lunts in the 1920s, ’30s, and ’40s. As guests are welcomed through the Lunts’ remarkable creation, they are surprised and then moved by countless details.

This week, our beautiful summer planters are coming to life—thanks to the expertise of Southeast Wisconsin Master Gardeners. We are so grateful for their time and talent in planting and tending the containers that welcome every visitor to Ten Chimneys throughout the season.

As we celebrate this annual tradition, we’re reminded that horticulture has always been part of life here. In our archives is a 1947 invoice for the purchase of the Ten Chimneys greenhouse—along with vintage photographs that show the Lunts’ dedication to cultivating beauty on the estate.

Today, that legacy continues. From historic greenhouse beginnings to the vibrant planters you see today, the spirit of thoughtful gardening remains at the heart of Ten Chimneys.

Please join us in thanking the Master Gardeners for helping us carry this tradition forward.

Thirsting for Knowledge Thursday
"It's a terrifying business, but it has its compensations." Alfred Lunt captured the balance of fear and joy at the heart of a great performance.

Trivia Question: In 1955 Alfred won a Tony award for Best Actor in a Play...what play was it (HINT: The picture shown is Alfred dressed for his role)?

Join us this summer for a tour, Conversation with Phylicia Rashad, or see the Fellows in action with their Concluding Presentation. https://www.tenchimneys.org/

This Memorial Day Weekend, we invite you to reflect, remember, and reconnect with a story of service and resilience.

We pay tribute to Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne--who performed tirelessly in London during the Blitz, most notably in "There Shall Be No Night" and applauded the USO and their vital role they played in lifting the spirits of service members during WWII.

In honor of their legacy--and in remembrance of all who have served and paid the ultimate price, we appreciate your service to our country.

Join us for a meaningful visit--where history, gratitude, and the beauty of the season come together.

Thirsting for Knowledge Thursday
Did you know that when Alfred Lunt and Lynn Fontanne performed There Shall Be No Night in London during WWII, they used no sound effects--the bombs outside provided them. A poignant reminder this Memorial Day weekend of the significance of theater bringing light to dark times.

We all carry expectations—placed on us by others, and sometimes by ourselves.
In the theater, there’s a moment when an actor is asked to step beyond that—to take on a role entirely different from what they’ve been known for.
It’s called Against Type.
This summer at Ten Chimneys, that idea becomes an exploration—guided by Phylicia Rashad and brought to life by the Lunt-Fontanne Fellows over the course of a week this July.
And in two evenings, you’re invited to experience both sides of that journey:
✨ An intimate Conversation with Phylicia Rashad
✨ The Concluding Presentation, where the work is revealed
Sometimes the most interesting performances begin with a question:
What happens when you are seen differently?

Announcing our 2026 Lunt Fontanne Fellowship Program Master Teacher: Phylicia Rashad!

This summer, Ten Chimneys becomes a sanctuary for craft once again—where legacy and mentorship meet on the estate. While the week itself is an immersive retreat, we’ll open the doors for two rare public moments: an intimate conversation with Phylicia herself and a Concluding Presentation that Ms. Rashad and the Lunt-Fontanne Fellows will take the stage highlighting the work they explored during their week at Ten Chimneys.
