Wheelock Academy Historic Site

Wheelock Academy Historic Site Wheelock Academy, a former Native American girl's boarding school founded in 1831, closed in 1955. We would love for you to spend some time with us.

When you visit the historic Wheelock Academy, it is like taking a step back in time. From the moment you drive through the gate onto the majestic grounds of the former girls' boarding school until you leave, you can almost sense the students who lived and were educated there. Touring the grounds, hearing the stories and visiting our museum to view the historical treasures that lie within, give vis

itors a look at what it was like during Wheelock's lively years. Though the students are gone now, and the dormitory and classrooms have been closed for many years, the Choctaw Nation takes pride in preserving the heritage and continuing to tell the amazing stories associated with the school. We offer many events during the year including movie nights, craft fairs, reunions and school tours. Come and be part of Wheelock Academy and its amazing history.

πŸŽ‰ It’s our birthday! πŸŽ‰

The Oklahoma Historical Society was founded on May 27, 1893, by members of the Territorial Press Association to preserve newspapers. Over the years, the OHS has developed numerous collections, programs, research centers, museums, historic homes, and military sites across the state. All of this helps us fulfill our mission to collect, preserve, and share the history and culture of the state of Oklahoma and its people.
