The Gardner Museum

The Gardner Museum The Gardner Museum was established in 1978 in the Levi Heywood Memorial Library building.

Designed by Fuller and Delano of Worcester, the building was completed in 1886 and is now one of the finest extant examples of Richardson Romanesque architecture. Notable museum architectural details include stained glass windows throughout and numerous decorative plaques. Since at the time of the building's construction Gardner was known as the “Chair City of the World," the shape of a chair was

incorporated into the center front façade of the building (see picture above). Some interior features include three ornate brick and stone fireplaces and beautifully preserved oak moldings. The Gardner Museum was individually placed on the National Register of Historic Places and is located in the Gardner Uptown National Register Historic District. Museum Coordinator: Marion Knoll

Happy National Nonprofit Day to all the nonprofits working to make our communities better places to live and to all the people working every day to make a difference in their communities! ♥️ WE ARE PROUD to be one of Gardner’s community institutions. We preserve, care for, and share the city’s history; provide resources for research & school projects; offer programs and events of general interest (fall programs starting soon!); and bring some holiday magic to the community each year with our Festival of Trees. We do all of this with a small team and without financial support from the City or the State. Our general operating budget is supported by admission, donations, fundraisers, and membership contributions. And admission is just $3 for adults❗️If you have not visited us yet, STOP BY AND SEE WHAT WE HAVE TO OFFER. Open Wed-Sun, 1-4 pm❗️If you would like to support the Museum, CONSIDER BECOMING A MEMBER. Membership is easy, affordable, and helps us continue preserving and sharing Gardner’s history for the community❗️And here's your history fact for today: National Nonprofit Day was established in 2017 by philanthropist and business strategist Sherita J. Herring. It recognizes the long history of charitable organizations in the US, dating back to the Tariff Act of 1894, which established tax-exempt status for certain charities.

⚾️ In July, the Boston Red Sox won their 15th consecutive game. The streak ended with a 5-1 loss to the Baltimore Orioles but it was still remarkable and a tie with the 1946 streak as the longest in franchise history! ⚾️ The last time they won 15 straight games, Ted Williams was putting up an MVP season in 1946 and leading them to an American League championship. ⚾️ Why not celebrate the streak match from 80 years ago with a visit of our GARDNER DAY AT FENWAY display, and a purchase of the famous Ted Williams poster?! 🪑 In our gift shop for only $8. We are open Wed-Sun, 1-4 pm.

We had a wonderful time yesterday at the well-attended National Night Out on the GHS fields! A big THANK YOU to the organizers, Gardner Community Action Committee, all volunteers & sponsors, our fellow vendors who shared so many valuable resources and offered fun activities on a hot & humid day, and to the many adults, families, and kids who stopped by our table! - We hope to see many of you at the museum soon: to learn more about our city’s past, take advantage of our resources for research/school projects, or attend one (or more!) of our upcoming evening programs. Remember, adult admission is only $3, children are free! There is always something new to discover at the museum. Congratulations to the family who won our raffle basket (annual family membership, book about Gardner’s history, & other goodies). They were so excited about their prize, so we are sure we will be seeing them at the museum soon! Thank you to everyone who made the 13th annual National Night Out such a fun community event. We were happy to be part of it!

Our Summer Exhibit “Memories Alive in Images” is now open to the public. This photography exhibit is open during regular museum hours, Wednesday through Sunday, 1–4 pm, and will remain on display through August 30.

Congratulations again to the winners and ALL participants in this year’s Hervey Bowden Essay Contest! Students were challenged to explore the past and present of a local place, tradition, or way of life while examining how changes affected the community over time. The two winning essays focused on beloved Gardner landmarks: Greenwood Memorial Pool and the Goodnow-Pearson department store. Although it was understandably nerve-wracking for the students to read their essays aloud during the well-attended Awards Night, the supportive audience helped make it a memorable evening with laughter, shared memories, and discussion. Events like this remind us why local history matters and how community stories, landmarks, and institutions CONTINUE TO LIVE ON through memories, museum collections, and now student research & writing. Thank you to contest/scholarship supporter Steve Fredette, independent judges, participating students & families, and everyone who attended and encouraged these young historians!

Support of our non-profit museum comes from all sides of life: A big shout-out to Quality Cleans LLC (formerly known as Scott’s Cleaning Service)! We appreciate their commitment to maintaining continuity of service during a difficult transition, ensuring the museum remains clean and welcoming for our visitors and programs. They’ve been with us since 2022, and we’re glad their bi-weekly cleaning services resumed in March after our winter break.

It’s Teacher Appreciation Week (May 4-8)! As a special thank you for their dedication and hard work, educators receive free admission tomorrow, Sunday 5/3/2026, from 1-4 pm. It’s a great opportunity for teachers to check out our displays for themselves before sharing the experience with their students and perhaps planning the next field trip!
