Garden City Arts GCA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit arts organization with a gallery located in Downtown Garden City. We offer art exhibitions, art classes and cultural events.

Garden City Arts was founded in 1989 under the name of Southwest Arts & Humanities Council with the intent to bring more arts and humanities events to Southwest Kansas. The organization was housed in borrowed spaces for many years until moving to our current downtown location in 2001. During our history Garden City Arts has provided the community with numerous musical & theatrical performances, children's art activities and several public works of art throughout Garden City. Currently we host 10 to 12 art exhibits every year and showcase the talents of local artists in our gift section. We also provide public works of art, cultural programs and art classes for both children and adults for residents of Southwest Kansas. Garden City Arts operates under the guidance of a 12 member board of directors and Executive Director Katy Guthrie.

We’re excited to share a special opportunity at Garden City Arts!

Former Kansas Poet Laureate Huascar Medina will be in our area next week and was kind enough to fit a stop at GCA into his schedule.

Join us for an evening of poetry featuring a 45-minute reading followed by audience questions. Medina is a poet, editor, essayist, and arts advocate whose work has appeared in publications including The New York Times, Latino Book Review, and Kansas Magazine.

Copies of his books and art posters will also be available for purchase.

There’s even more to see in the 3rd Annual SWKS Squared exhibition!

We’ll continue highlighting the artists who helped make this year’s show such a strong display of creativity in our region. Photos are a great introduction, but these works are even better in person.

Two new exhibits are now on view around Garden City, and both offer very different ways of looking at the world around us.

At Patrick Dugan’s Coffee House, see Kolby Van Camp’s photography exhibit, “Deep Fields: From the Kansas Sky.” A Kansas native, amateur astronomer, broadcaster, and musician, Kolby uses astrophotography to capture objects in the night sky that are too faint to be fully seen with the naked eye. Through long exposures, distant light reveals nebulae, remnants of stars, and galaxies far beyond our own, all photographed beneath the Kansas sky.

At Hidden Trail Brewing, see Alisha Peña’s “Pretty Ugly Things.” Alisha is a local professional tattoo artist whose work combines bright, illustrative color with subjects that balance beauty and darkness. Her goal is to create work that might make you cringe a little, but still make it hard to look away.

Both exhibits are up now, so stop by, spend some time with the work, and support local and regional artists in the spaces where our community already gathers.

En Patrick Dugan’s Coffee House, visita “Deep Fields: From the Kansas Sky” de Kolby Van Camp. A través de la astrofotografía, Kolby captura objetos del cielo nocturno que son demasiado tenues para verse claramente a simple vista, revelando nebulosas, restos de estrellas y galaxias lejanas, todo fotografiado bajo el cielo de Kansas.

Friday night, we celebrated all 38 artists who participated in this year’s SWKS Squared Art Competition and recognized seven award winners:

October is here, and there are plenty of ways to make it a little more creative at Garden City Arts.

One of the biggest events this month is the opening reception for SWKS Squared, our annual 12x12 art competition featuring artists from across the region. Join us Friday, October 2 from 6–8 PM to see the exhibition, meet artists, and help us celebrate this year’s show.

We also have good news for anyone who missed out on our Fall Postcards class. The first session filled up so quickly that we opened a second session!

Several other October classes and programs are also getting close to capacity, so if something catches your eye, don’t wait too long to register.

LAST CALL for SWKS Squared!

Entries are due SATURDAY, September 26, by 5 PM at Garden City Arts.

Before you bring your work in, double-check that your artwork measures exactly 12 x 12 inches, including the frame, is ready to hang, and has the corresponding entry tag securely attached to the back.

Artists may submit up to three works for a $25 entry fee.

Then bring everything to:
